Hows it goin everyone.

I have never hunted rabbits before due to paranoia of their disease. Iv always shot quail and dove. And id really like to go for cotton and jacks. So i could have a little somthin different on the dinner table.

Any advise on all things rabbits i could use.
Im mostly in A zone. 33hwy.

Thanks everyone!

No real secrets to hunting rabbits.....Walk brushy areas, sage, farmland edges, or if you can, get permission to hunt near farms....If you have to, invest in a pellet gun....Gives you the option to hunting/shooting closer to houses (with permission) without being as dangerous or the sound of loud shots (.17 rifle, .22, or shotgun).

Also remember, rabbits if you're shooting a shotgun (best in brushy conditions), you need to shoot steel (non lead).

Cleaning rabbits is easy, if you filet them....It also allows you to clean without touching the gut, if you're concerned about stuff.....Pretty good thread below.

Good luck

No "expert" but here are a few pointers that work for me. Go to Home Depot and buy a box of disposable latex gloves for handling them. Stop at the market and buy a couple of jugs of Arizona Iced Tea. Drink the tea and save the jugs for water to take when you hunt bunnies and need to wash down/rinse (they're sturdy with great lids).

Walk very slowly and quietly or you might conclude there are no rabbits in the area when there actually are plenty but they're spooky. Watch for piles of poop, then sneak up on that spot later. Learn what alfalfa looks like.

Good luck!

With rabbit from what I was told and stuck with is check the liver. If it is spotted don't eat it. Leave it for the coyotes and other animals to eat. I've always got them with an air rifle. Good luck hunting.

Thanks for great tips. Do yoi all always use gloves when handling them? I never do with uplands

I use gloves when skinning and field dressing, partly due to disease and partly just because I don't want the smell on my hands. A box of disposabal gloves is a cheap remedy.

Anything braised/low and slow works well. Think chili, stews, etc. Jacks don't hold up well to fast grilling or frying.. they'll come out tough/stringy, and very gamey. I've also dabbled with sausage with good results (chorizo and breakfast sausage patties).

I have tried and really enjoyed several of the rabbit/hare (dove and pigeon)recipes from Hank Shaw at the Honest-Food link above. My favorite is White Rabbit an Italian style rabbit which as mentioned is cooked moist and slow till the meat falls off the bone. When hunting dove/quail load #7 or #6 steel and take any rabbits encountered to add to your enjoyment.
