Otto and I were fortunate to hunt a friends duck club Saturday morning...91 degrees at 4:30 am...So, we weren't expecting much, but at sunrise we had teal and mallards trying to come into a pond with new millet in it...Our set up sucked, when the light breeze came up in our face...Meaning, the decoys were on the wrong side of the dike...It didn't seem to matter that much to the mallards though...25 yds right over us...
Otto is a great shot for a 13 year old, but this morning with a new gun, he was a little off (he said he was too excited...)...As good as it started, it was over when the sun peeked over the cloudless horizon...We ended up with 5 mallards, 1 pintail, and a cinnamon.
11:00 am and 98 degrees...Let's go eat...Subway in Westmoreland and back to the club...Hung around watching, but never saw another bird...So, we decided to see what Wister had to offer...I must be a glutton for punishment...
We get to Wister about 1:30 pm and there some pretty good blinds back on the board...We pick a likely one and head out...We get to our site and there's almost no shade...The salt cedar seems to be dying and is very thin (beetles doing their job?)...2:30 and we settle in the best we can...Black dog Coley ain't liking this much either...Did I mention there's zero wind and it's HOT!!!!...
For over an hour, we don't see much, but then the pintail start trickling back...Then the teal...We don't get a lot of shots (except pintail), but Otto was making them count...He gets a beautiful bull sprig and I chip away on teal...At around 6:00 pm, we finally get #7...Thank God...
Considering the heat, dark to dark hunt, and the relentless mosquitos...We had a great day waterfowling...
ps...Used Otto's #67 ressie at Wister yesterday and added 7 more ducks...Left at 9:00 am...Tough drive home to say the least...............
