G-10/Other Premium Tag

I have a pretty specific situation I am wondering if anyone has personally encountered. I called the SD CDFW Office but the answer they gave didn’t instill a lot of confidence that the question was actually understood and I could tell I wasn’t going to be able to explain further with the person I was talking to. I will try to call again and see if someone else can answer. The CPEN Game Wardens office also didn’t know the answer and referred me to the state. Which is why I’m asking here as a third possible option for an answer.

The CPEN G-10 Tag drawing occurs outside of the state big game drawing. It happens in early May so that people have time to put in for other tags if they are not drawn the G-10 tag. I am wondering if it is possible to both be drawn for G-10 AND put in for a second premium tag using your 1st choice application. Next year I should have enough points to draw an X Zone as a party with my girlfriend and she also has a chance of drawing G-13 this year on her own. If she is drawn for G-10 before the state drawing deadline on 2 June can she apply for one of those two tags (G-13 or X)? Or if she is drawn for both will she have to forfeit one or the other?

Like I said, I’ll be reaching out to the CDFW office again but asking here just in case anyone has ran into this situation before.

Thanks all!

I've had better luck emailing. You may get passed around a bit and need to follow up though.

I gave up calling and asking after they couldn't differentiate a22 and a-zone. I've had some other blatantly incorrect advice given over the phone including other states.

Per Gemini:

The G-10 tag counts as one of your two allowed deer tags, but it does not block or replace your ability to use the First-Deer Tag Drawing Application for the state drawing.
Because the G-10 is issued separately by the base (not through the CDFW licensing system as a standard “First-Deer” or “Second-Deer” purchase), you can still purchase and submit a First-Deer Tag Drawing Application by the June 2 deadline for premium tags (G-13, X-zone, etc.). The two systems are independent. CDFW does not list any restriction prohibiting G-10 holders from entering the Big Game Drawing, and Camp Pendleton rules do not mention any conflict with state premium tags or preference points.

• If drawn for both, you keep both tags (no forfeiture).
You would simply use the G-10 tag for the Camp Pendleton hunt and the premium tag (G-13 or X-zone) for the other hunt/area. This fits exactly within the two-deer-tag limit. You cannot take more than one deer per tag, and bag/possession limits are per tag/zone. Note that you can also hunt Camp Pendleton with an Archery-Only (AO) tag instead of the G-10 tag in some cases, but that’s a separate CDFW-purchased tag option.
