Anyone know if a German Shepard would be a good Duck Dog. Currently I have a 10 month old GSD that will retrieve anything in any water (ocean, River, lake, ice cold streams). What do you guys think?

I'd say typically not BUT, if your dog loves to retrieve then go for it. Make sure your dog ignores decoys though.......

German Shepard’s are very smart dogs, you can train them to do almost anything .I read about a duck hunter years ago who successfully used his Shepard as a retriever. He may or may not have a soft mouth so that could be a problem. Some dogs do not like a bird in their mouth due to all the feathers but that mostly happens with upland birds like pheasants. In addition to teaching him to retrieve on command he has to be taught excellent obedience and good blind manners. Retrieving is only one part of being a good duck dog. One last thing, you need to introduce him to gun fire. You need to do that slowly and the right way . He’s 10 months old so you need to do that soon. If not done right he’ll be ruined for hunting purposes.

There is another guy on here with a pit duck dog on here.

if you are a refuge hunter it might come in handy when you sail a bull spoon and someone calls my bird and you say "not today refuge boy not today" Angriffsbefehl!!!!!!

awesome! I introduced him to gun fire when he was about 4-5 months and he still retrieves. We will work on "excellent" obedience and blind manners. Would you recommend a shock collar?

Yo bro. When i was a kid hunting baldwin lake.there used to be a guy that walked the shore before they had a closed zone.he had two mutts a german shepard and a pit bull. The pit was the best one. But he had them all trained.it was cool.because his dogs would go flush them, he'd shoot a couple and send different dogs after them. I think he lived on the shoreline.cause when iwas there hed pop out like ever so often then dissappear.

If you haven’t used a collar before, have little or no experience using them, then DO NOT USE THE COLLAR. You can ruin a dog quite quickly by using a collar incorrectly. Once you screw up a dog by misuse of a collar it is very difficult or impossible to undo the damage. Since you are asking the question I assume you haven’t used a collar before or your experience is limited. You may be better off having him started by a pro and then finishing the training process yourself. I have seen many hunting dogs F....ed up by misuse of E collars.

That is correct I do not have experience with the collar. Is the collar necessary? I mean he is very obedient almost excellent but not quite there yet. Thanks for the advise. appreciate it

A E collar is not necessary. Sounds like you are a novice. Get yourself a couple of retriever training books and a training video , study them and go from there. It’s going to be a tougher job training a German Shepard to hunt as opposed to say a lab with a hunting and field ancestry. You can probably do it but it will be challenging.
You say your dog has been around gunfire before. I’m not sure what that means. There is a proper way to do it. If not done right you may find your dog is actually gun shy. Training books will tell you how to do it. Good luck, I wish you success.

Seeing a German Shepherd fetch a duck would be awesome. I used to do schutzhund with my American Bull and once saw a standard poodle do the trials.. pretty rad.
I hunted pheasants with a guy who had a well trained standard poodle. The dog was awesome. We hunted with his poodle and my lab and his poodle did as well as my lab. Poodles are water dogs and make good waterfowl dogs.

Theres a guy at mendota that has a standard poodle duck dog.He said the only problem with long haired dogs is stickers and burrs.

I had a doberman growing up that was an awesome quail dog didn't point but did stop on birds she could see. Great squirrel dog too!

The ears was always the biggest issues with her. Water and brush non stop in the ear so cleaning was a constant chore
