Hunted honkers this morning with some friends.......Got 3 honkers and 2 were banded....... :)

The big yellow lab on the left is my Trigger's dad......And probably his last hunt.....He just turned 12.

Both birds were from Utah......Banded in 2011.

Nice job, congrats on the bands. I haven't waterfowl hunted ever but shooting banded birds intrigues me.

I've also shot banded doves, band-tail pigeons, and pheasant.....My old roomie got a banded turkey here in SD.................. ;)

Nice going. How do you get the info from the bands?

Cool to hear about the bands info and your Utah birds. I had no idea they banded turkey also.

Many of the original birds were banded & radioed.......This tom was banded & radioed in Pamo Valley, as part of study on the survival in the spring breeding season......17 were banded......3 toms & 14 hens......All the hens died at the hands of bobcats......This tom was 4 years old......He also had the radio still attached.

The week-end started great with a limit of honkers and two bands.......Saturday was really slow, but it's always great hunting out of layouts and we didn't get skunked......Today was beautiful. Clear & cold......Then really windy.......Great way to end the duck season....... ;)

Steve... didn't they find one of those birds on the fringe of Anza Borrego? I thought one of the Toms...

Nick,

One of the original radioed hens was found pass Scissors Crossing/Hwy 78 in Anza Borrego State Park(Canta Rana bird).....Another radioed hen nested on the other side of Lake Henshaw (McCaw Ranch/Sutherland Lake bird). She moved over 17 miles to nest.....Another hen nested near Ramona in an Avocado grove (Sutherland bird). A friend had a shot at banded tom in Pamo Valley (when we could hunt there) the 1st year. It's beard had been cut off. So, it wasn't legal.

Birds have been recovered as far as MCAS, Fallbrook, Anza, Vista, Barrett Lake, Jamul, and I've seen two dead ones on Int. 8.

Turkeys are way down this year, but they have dispersed to many new areas from the original 3 drop-off locations.

Steve,
Those honker pics are great… looks like an awesome hunt! Glad to see you got a nice limit of birds on the last day – that is always a solid spot. Really thought Jacob and I were going to have a better morning shoot, but glad to see that the afternoon paid off for him. Sorry I had to leave early, but the traffic back to LA gets brutal in the afternoon. Just as I was leaving and the cloud cover came in and the wind picked up, I knew it was going to get good. Did Jacob join you or did he continue to hunt that one spot?

Tom,

It was great meeting you as well......Yep, really thought you guys were on the X after Saturday......Goes to show things change rapidly.......Jacob stayed in the spot you were in.

Went out today and there must have been 200 birds in my decoys at the south end...... :-[
