In the off season, I do a decent amount of hiking/ backpacking. My dad, uncle, bro in law and I did a rim to rim hike this spring. We drive to the south rim of the canyon, take a 4.5 hour shuttle ride to the north rim and stay the night at the Old Kaibab Lodge. A shuttle takes us to the trailhead the next morning and we begin a 25 mile hike. Took us a very leisurely 12 hours. This is the second time I've done it. Seeing the Grand Canyon from the touresty south rim doesn't do it justice. It's almost beyond words to describe how massive it is when you're in the belly of it. Started at 0600 at in the mid 40's and by the 3/4 way point, it was mid 90's.

And to make it somewhat hunting related, this bull was about 20 yards from a campground, on the side of the road. Cow was in the parking lot at the south rim.

Was the bull on the north or south rim ?

The elk were on the South Rim. Didn't see any elk on the north rim but a ton of deer near the lodge. We'd see 40-50 deer in the meadows around the Kaibab Lodge.

Thought so, I helped a buddy a couple years ago with a deer hunt on the north side, There are elk there but the biolgists dont want them there because of how they impact the deer, consequently you can get otc tags. The other species that you can get otc on the north side last time I was there (2010) was bison, How many of you knew that ? I actually saw one get weighed in while I was there, Once again the biologists want them gone. Apparently they are very hard to get and mostly reside within the national park which is of course off limits.

Didn't know that but its like most places. If the tags are easy to draw or OTC, the quality USUALLY isn't there.

You would be surprised... ;D

all of the elk in the north Kaibab from Utah..if you visit the south at the right time of year you will see GIANT bulls..it borders unit 9 which is one the best elk units in the state.some will argue the best..
