The biggest problem is that SOME politicians and almost ALL of the news organizations refer to AR's as "assault weapons", which they absolutely are NOT. An assault weapon is a fully-automatic weapon used by the military for war. An AR is a semi-automatic rifle, nothing more and nothing less. Granted, it is a "military style weapon", but that doesn't make it an assault weapon. Private ownership of an assault weapon is already banned. You can't own one, except in certain cases that are highly regulated. I get a kick out of some of my friends that confront me saying "We should ban assault weapons" (or something like that), and I reply, "They ARE banned. Private citizens can't own an assault weapon." That always leaves them speechless. What I think is going to happen is that the feds are going to crack down on certain "things" like background checks (which, BTW, I totally agree with), high-capacity mags, etc. like they are trying to do here in Kalifornication. I once challenged Senator Feinstein's ideas for stricter gun laws just by asking her how a pistol grip, flash suppressor or collapsible stock make a rifle more dangerous. The obvious answer is that they don't. If governments would just enforce existing gun laws, the problem would decrease substantially. It will never go away because criminals don't obey the law. So go after the criminals, not law-abiding private citizens.
I know I'm preaching to the choir, but... I am not off my soapbox.
