I’ve been looking to hunt jacks lately. Went off the 138 into San Gabriel And saw one jack and couldn’t get a shot off but it gave me hope. Do you guys know any good spots for jacks. I live in south Orange County.

If you saw one, there are more. Pause when you are walking, makes them nervous, other wise they will let you walk past and go the other direction.

For the Jacks... you gotta be quiet, and I mean Reeeeeeal quiet (with those big ol' tall ears) as you creep thru the terrain. You'll likely spook them at first, and you'll see them run off. And Jacks seem to always run a pretty good ways away before they chillout again. (Unless they are already in thick stuff) And they will remember where they last saw you before they ran, so you'll need to engineer your creep up on them so you utilize the brush to hide your approach from view, and also the wind direction so your scent doesn't blow to them, and come in from an angle that's not straight in from where they last saw you.

Just walk around the desert or foothills and shoot em in the head when they bound up and run. No need to over complicate it much beyond that.

What time of day did you hunt? Dawn is great, but I've always had better luck with jacks right before sundown.

I always see several anytime I'm on BLM land out in the desert. I'm assuming you were talking about the San Gabriel Mountains? If so, the closest BLM land would be around Victorville. That whole area has tons of jackrabbits and I've taken several out there. I'll usually walk for a minute and then stand and wait for a minute. Jacks seem to try and "out wait" you and sometimes right when I'm about to give up and walk, they'll break. They run pretty fast, seem to be much faster than cottontails, but very rewarding when you hit them at full speed. Eating them is a different story...

try using a distress call. when i hunt in a jack friendly area for coyotes. ill use a jack distress and sometimes if the yotes dont come in the jacks will go straight o the call. try it!

wtf? i have always hunted them in the back of a pickup doing way to fast with quite a few PBR's to stay loose. Often when i hear people say you do not need a 30 round clip magazine, i say but its fun to mag dump on a jack going 60mph.

Well first off stop mixing your beer altogether. as for cocktails shaken is always preferred.

Not really a beer guy. Only do beer every once in awhile. Don't get me wrong, the mouth likes the taste of some of them, like Boddington's or Maybe Negra Modelo, but my guts very much don't like it. Horrible bloat.
