My 9yo, Jake, pulled this res for youth Saturday. We hunt SJ a lot and have done youth day at Wister which is a lot of fun thanks to the Vega's.

We have never been to Kern but the boy wants to go. Unfortunately he has Friday night lights football or we would take the day off school to go scout.

As a 9yo, he needs birds decoying or the chances of a hit are low. We were thinking an assigned pond would be best for him and picked out one on the map. If anyone would mind giving us some feedback on our choice, drop me a note and I'll message you.

Thanks in advance. We'll see you out at the SJ work days this off-season.

Great draw at a great refuge...Believe it or not...Some of the shortest walks are in the "Free Roam" areas...You can literally walk out of 2 and hunt...It is a in walk though water, but there are small islands to hide on.

I hunted an assigned pond last season that was pretty good...The walk wasn't too bad, but again, you hunt from the water.

I have hunted a couple of the assigned blinds...I would think this would be your best bet...Guaranteed an island...The kill numbers will be on the sheet at the check in (see example)...Most these walks aren't too bad for a 9 year old.

Good luck

ps...Bring a cart, seats, and a sled
