Knife sharpening

So I have like 5 hunting knives, a small game hatchet, and a machete. I usually use a field sharpener to keep them sharp but that doesn't give me a prolonged sharp edge. I've used a whet stone as well it I'm inconsistent with left vs right side so I end up having different angles and it takes forever. Just got a Works Sharp Sharpener. It's legit. You can pick your exact angles and it has guides to make sure you're keeping straight as well as multiple belts for different tasks. Watched the video and practiced on a knife and the hatchet. Needless to say, I have no clue what I'm doing. Anyone out there use an e-sharpener? I'm almost thinking about selling it and just getting my blades professionally sharpened.

What do you guys do to keep your blades sharp?
Anyone want to buy a Ken Onion edition Works Sharpener?

Great subject......None of the above for me.......I use a Smith's diamond sharpener......I also use the Smith's hand held for filet knives.

I use the Lansky sharpening kit. Works great for me.

I have a German Solingen steel folder my departed close friend Henry (God rest his soul) gave me years ago that I use for heavy work but most work these days gets done with a disposable blade Havalon. Use a Havalon once and you wont waste your time sharpening blades any more.

I work at Cold Steel and we always recommend Lansky. I personally have a Lansky kit with guides for the correct angle. I also use a Smith diamond triangle for the big boys.

You forgot "send them out to be sharpened professionally". Had an old Schrade Uncle Henry Bear Paw with a broken tip. Sent it out and it came back looking like it just came back from the factory and sharp enough to cut patterns in paper. Pretty quick turn around also.

Know this is an old thread, but the Work Sharp is the real deal. I used to sharpen knives for butchers on the side with a WS and they were always impressed. Upgrade the belts and I’ve literally whittled a beard hair with an Ontario RAT 2.

Hmmm, I know someone is not making money on this but I just turn over a ceramic plate and stroke the rim on the bottom with my knives leaving an angle of about a full paper matchbook cover.

It's never going to be havalon sharp but then I don't have to keep buying them.

Those electric ones eat the blades up. Nothing beats an old-fashioned stone w/ oil followed by a leather strap. I use Redi-Edge in the field.
Take the time to learn how to use a stone and your knives will thank you!

I recently made my first knife and bought a belt sander. I use the finer grit belts to sharpen my knives. I also use the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug especially when in the field to bring the edge back.
