My buddy and I are trying the deer hunting for about 2 and now 3rd season now. We still have not gotton off a shot. Seen two doe last season and heard 6 shots on opening day and that was all. Looking to see if any hints can be given to us but no secrets needs to be given. We try to hunt in Frazer Park, Azusa, and Angeles Crest area so far, but like said no luck. might start looking at at a ranch to get some experience, any suggestions? good but not too expensive since we are both somewhat disable vets.

Welcome to SCH and thank you for your service......Frazier Park, Mt Pinos, and surrounding areas are steep and pretty tough hunting.....You may want to call GSGS or Fortin Outfitter's in Ventura.....Don't know what they get for a deer, but that is a good start as far as guides/outfitters go.

Hi I'm no expert but I can relate to not seeing a deer for my first couple of seasons. My advice is find someone who hunts by where you are willing to drive to and going from there. Pre season scouting, being persistent, national forest maps, gps apps for phone, stopping by your local forestry office,and time in the field all help. Rabbit hunting in July will often help you find deer zones as well. And hike as much as you can. Look for sign, talk to people you see and stick with it. Try to hunt off hours if you can arrange your schedule ie weekdays and drops in temperature. A drizzle in so cal gets the deer moving. Also look for water and oak trees. Good luck!
