Daddy, I have to pee.........Was the slogan of the day........lol
Stefi and I had planned this day for a long time. It would be her 1st deer hunt.....We practiced her shooting with her new Savage .243.....We practiced last night fake shooting at a deer target in my house......She was nervous, but I thought she was ready.
She got to my house 10 minutes early this morning. So, I knew she was excited, as was I. I barely slept last night. When we got to our spot. It was about 30 minutes before legal shoot time. We tried sleeping, but that was useless.....As daybreak broke, we heard turkeys, but saw no deer. About 20 minutes later, we see our 1st does. 1 doe, 2 does, 3 does, and they kept coming until there was about 15 or so. A little spike shows up, but that was it......I thought the rut was starting!.....They finally mosey off.....About that time, Stefi says to me......Daddy, I have to pee......Well, if you've got to go. You've got to go. She had no sooner stood up and I see 2 bucks (2x2 & 3x2) coming down the trail.....I tell her to sit back down, but they had made us......They weren't running away, but they were moving pretty good. At about a 125 yds, the big forky stops to look back. She said she just wasn't comfortable shooting that far.....Good enough.
After about another hour, I suggested we take a walkabout. Not even a doe was seen....We get back to the truck at about 8:30 am and I suggest going to breakfast. In the same breath, I said that the nice 3x3 that I had seen recently never showed up. So, maybe we should stay for awhile longer. The words had just came out of my mouth when she said.....Hey dad, there's a doe.....Yeah, and the 3x3 was with her.....Her rifle was in the back put away and I told her to sneak out her side. I do the same from my side, but the jig was up. Off he goes and doesn't really offer a shot till he's at least a 140 yds away.....What in the World!.....Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. At this, we head to breakfast in Santa Ysabel.
We cruise around some and then head back up the mountain at about 12:30 pm......This time we set-up in the exact spot she shot her 1st turkey. Tucked back in the oaks, but a great view of the meadows below. We settle in for the long haul. At about 1:30 pm, we see our 1st does.....The winds were swirling and despite not being able to really see us. They knew we were there and gave us a wide birth. Another hour and a half go by and all we had seen were 4 longbeards and a doe....At 3:15, Stefi says.....Daddy, I have to pee.....I say, you know what happened last time.....Again, the words were barely out of my mouth. I see a deer running down below us in the thick oaks.....I grab the rifle and hand it to her and she says......Daddy, there he is!.....Unfortunately, her shooting sticks were pointing far to the left.....He apparently had seen us because he came to a screeching halt....He knows we're there and we're afraid to move.....He then turns to move away and I grab her sticks and put them in front of her.....He see's the movement and stops......Fatal decision!......One shot from her little .243, he humps up and goes about 50 yds and tumbles over......Stefi's 1st buck!......Beautiful 3x3 and fat as all get out.
Just doesn't get any better than spending the day with your daughter in the woods and being part of her getting her 1st deer.
