I am a Newb to Southern California and know nothing about the area. Can anyone give me some tips/good areas (or direct me to the resources) near Tustin? 1-2 hours (or less?) out preferably. I picked up fly fishing last year so any suggestions on flies would be appreciated as well.

Thank you very much!

there are a ton of options around, it just depends on what you want to catch.

I would suggest looking at 976FRESH or google Jim Mathews.

as far as the type of flies, again it depends on where you go and what you want to catch

trout fishing I typically use caddis pattern for dry flies, maybe an adams or a stimulator or yellow humpy
Bead head hares ear, pheasant tails, copper johns, zebra midge for nymph/midge patterns
olive and black wooly buggers for streamers

its a good place to start

try going to Bob Marriots and ask some questions. pick up a book on fly fishing local waters. Its a tough year with the drought. Id really suggest going up around Bishop or mammoth. its worth the extra time

let me know if you need more info.

I suggest getting into bass fishing in SoCal......Many more options with numerous lakes within your 2 hour driving radius......Irvine, Puddingstone, Perris, DVL, Skinner, Elsinore, Vail, Silverwood just to name a few......And that doesn't include a 1/2 dozen or more San Diego lakes.

Lure wise......Start with 5" Larry Yamamoto skinny Senkos in 2 colors......Green craw/black-flake & watermelon/black-flake (you may want to add watermelon/red-flake as well)...Best technique is too either flyline or wacky worm...Also have Aaron's Magic Robo Worms in both 4 1/2" & 6".....Texas rig, split shot. or drop-shot styles can all be used with this plastic worm.

Millions of other lures for bass......If I was just starting out, these would be my go to lures.......2 cents

ps......Get yourself a float tube too......Opens a lot more options.

pss.....All these plastics can be fished with spinning gear. In fact, it's normally the best way to fish them.

you might try the surf, lots of places to fish and lots of fish at certain times, look on scsurf to get a feel

check out dixon lake and lake wohlford. They are just south of camp pendleton. It is a bit pricey but u can rent boats with trolling motors. Weekdays are best as the weekends can be very crowded. use a popper or spook before and during sunrise. After that, ive had the best luck with watermelon jigs and plastics, and crankbaits. Laguna Niguel Lake used to be pretty good too but they did have an algae outbreak that killed off a lot of good bass. Their website claims that it's practically back to normal but I don't want to drop $40+ to find out. I havent tried any of the bigger lakes further inland due to a lack of having a boat or float tube.
