The boys and I got out to the San Jacinto wildlife area in San Moreno on Sunday morning. We got a couple of cotton tails near the entrance, OnX showed us as being on the Green. At about 7a we were approached by genteman who said that we couldn't shoot "upland game" in that area, as this was the bird side, and we needed to be on the "other side." He also said signs were posted to that effect.

We thanked him, discontinued hunting, and looked for the signs he referenced. They do not exist. Does anyone know about the two sides and are signs typically posted that might have been moved. We did see signs that said no target shooting etc., but nothing about an upland game area.

There should have been a permit booth your supposed to self-check in at before hunting the upland side. It's located across Davis Rd. from the wildlife area headquarters. I imagine the attached map is posted there but I've never hunted the upland side.

Upland Game:
Unless otherwise restricted by the Department, hunting is allowed daily from ½ hour prior to sunrise until sunset only for upland game birds and resident small game in designated areas (link opens in new windowsee map (PDF)). A self-issued permit, acquired on-site is required to enter the designated hunting area. Please check in at the permit booth located on Davis Road across the street from the Wildlife Area headquarters office.

Jackrabbit hunting season is open all year. Rabbits may only be hunted in the upland game unit.

That was definitely not there. Perhaps someone removed it. I assumed he was telling the truth, but wanted to confirm it. Thanks for the info @sdolan617 & @chessie!

Did you check-in at the kiosk on Davis Rd? Also, are you sure that was San Jacinto? You said, "The boys and I got out to the San Jacinto wildlife area in San Moreno on Sunday morning." San Moreno is just north of Alhambra and San Gabriel and I believe the LA Sheriffs would take a dim view of hunting there, LOL. Anyway, assuming you were in the right place this should have had check-in cards and maps, rules, etc.

If it didn't let me know and I'll let Tom know he needs to restock it.

@fish dog My geography is poor, but it was definitely the San Jacinto Wildlife area, and we definitely stopped by the booth at the entrance. The cards were there, but I think a notice(s) may have been removed. It might be worth a visit to see if all correct signs are posted. User error is also always a possibility, but we stopped hunting and looked for the referenced notices and didn't find any.

Ok, I let the boss out there know to check this thread so he can see what's sup with the kiosk.

Just want to clarify one more thing for Tom. When you say you were at the booth at the entrance it was the one in the picture above, right? I just want to make sure as there is actually a kiosk as you drive through the gate, right next to the check station, that's an informational kiosk regarding the wildlife in the area (mainly for the bird watchers and such) and I don't believe it has any hunting info on it at all. Looks like this...

The check-in kiosk is across Davis Rd. from the entrance (that road in the background near the trees). I know this is kind of a lousy picture but the check-in kiosk is the red circle, the wildlife info kiosk is the green circle. Just want to make sure we're talking about the same kiosk.

I checked everywhere, but where I assumed it would be is the "checkin Kiosk" on David Rd. We also looked around the area with the tree icon in the photo, but there wasn't much for signs there either.

Here's what's at the kiosk today...

...and the front gate on the waterfowl side...

Also, if anyone is going to any DFW Wildlife Area it's probably a good idea to pull up the DFW webpage for the area and check the rules posted before you go. They are going to put out some more check-in cards and such in the kiosk later.

What side of the road were you on? Driving into San Jacinto the upland area is on the left, the waterfowl area is on the right. Did the area just have fields or were there ponds, tulies and blinds?

We were on the wrong side, so the bird side and not the upland side. If you were to use the photo where "check in kiosk" is marked up. We were in the greenish column. We had also been deeper in on the bird side, and walked it quite a bit, but we found the rabbits around the green area, so we came back to it every half hour and there would be a couple each time. We had been there before, so we also followed David road further past the entrance, past the private property and scouted that area as well. I say scouted because we didn't see anything.

I assumed we were in the wrong, but didn't know how or why. The photo of the sign makes me feel like an idiot, and not for the first time. Review DFW regulations online as part of the scouting process, got it. Thanks you everyone who commented!

Next time you go, shoot me a PM. If I’m not busy, I’ll give you the two cent guide. I live just a few minutes from there.

Lake Perris also has an upland hunting area, its right next to San Jacinto Wildlife Area. I don’t know the specific rules for the Lake Perris upland area, but I just thought I’d bring it up if you don’t know about it already.

I’m friends with a Parks and Rec. LEO at Perris lake. He told me he’s surprised very few people hunt that section over there.

I couldn’t say if it was any good, as I haven’t been over there to consider hunting. I just go to the lake.

I used to hunt that area back about 40 years ago. I never did any good but I was hunting it with just about zero hunting knowledge then as I was just getting into hunting at the time and I was self-teaching myself, with books, long before the internet was even thought of. It was so long ago that one time as I approached the entrance on Moreno Beach Drive my truck 's water pump just literally blew apart. As I pulled over I stopped in front of the only inhabited place for quite a distance, which was a chicken farm. (Think about how populated that area is now). They let me use the phone (long before cell phones too) and AAA towed me into Perris to a garage and they changed out the pump. I do recall it was quite a walk, even back then when I was in some kind of reasonable shape, from the parking area to the hunting area. Something like a mile plus before you were allowed to even load your shotgun.
