I went on a church retreat a week ago up in Julian. I decided to take advantage of my location by waking up early and go scouting for turkey/ deer for the fun of it. About 2 miles away from our camp we saw a doe walk right in front of us and sort of come toward us (private property). We went looking for turkey after that and stumbled across some tracks that lead us to 2-3 decent sized turkeys. On our hike back to camp we saw about 30 turkeys that walked inches from our cabin. I was able to get within 5 feet of them and they didn't seem to mind. This was the first time I was able to scout for them and I know that it shouldn't be this easy. Can anybody agree that animals on private land feel no threat by humans?

No human predators on private land, your best best luck on public land will usually be adjacent to private where there's food and water

I have chased turkey sign and tracks all over public land in Los Padres and in SD county loosely in and around the Julian area and each time either found the turkeys on a ranchers land or in my campsite taunting me. always where I cant shoot them. My last two turkey harvests have been on private land never been able to get one on private. That being said I will never give up!

Always cool getting up close & personal with turkeys......Great way to learn to call and get reactions from both hens and gobblers.....Turkeys like private property for a few reasons.....Few predators, little harassment, food (bird feeders or just plain being fed), and permanent water.

Remember, hunting spring turkeys is similar to hunting the rut.....Toms can get stupid for love.

I think we all have the potential to be stupid for love......
