Hello every one I will be moving in the near future to California and looking at what areas I can hunt around san Diego county. I'm an avid waterfowler prior buck nut and mediocre upland game chaser. Any input or advise would be great.

Welcome to Southern Ca. I don't live in San Diego county but allot of people on here do. There's allot of Upland hunting done in Imperial Valley.

Thanks for the input I been looking at these maps lots of private land.looks like I need to get a GPS.

Welcome CR........Wister (Imperial Co.) & San Jacinto (Riverside Co.) Wildlife Areas will be the places that you will frequent the most for waterfowling......San Diego has a hunting program at Barrett Lake and there's public hunting at Lake Henshaw......Freelancing is pretty much restricted to the Imperial Valley and the Salton Sea.

D-16 is your deer zone along with A-22 (archery season), AO (archery only, general D zones), G-13 (doe only, and M-6.

Upland will be mostly in Imperial Co. as well (Dove, Gambel quail, and pheasant).....Turkeys, valley, mountain quail, and band-tailed pigeons will be mostly in San Diego East County.

Lots of good threads about these species.

Welcome. For SDC I would also recommend ordering a Cleveland NF map (I like the quadrangle topo map, spiral bound) as well as the BLM El Cajon and Borrego maps. Flipping through these will give you an understanding of the public land opportunities here from which you can start putting boots to the ground.

Where can you get these? I asked the ranger at the Turkey Tune-up and she said they usually have them for sale but not that day... Can you order them online?

Thanks guys I been reading through the old post cant wait to get my dog out next season. 1 question do the dogs get bit by rattlesnakes often? Never had to worry about it before.

I don't know how frequent it is, but they are here in good numbers.....I personally have never had a dog get hit.....And as far as friends go, I can only recall one hit. That's in over 50 years of hunting SoCal.

I've have quite a bit of experience with the rattlesnake vs dog thing. I can tell you that the vast majority of dogs have no instincts about snakes in general, if a dog is not trained to avoid them they will nine times out of ten go up and put there nose on them that's why you hear of most dogs being bit on the face. I train gun dogs for a living as well as provide snake aversion training, In my opinion I thinks its irresponsible to have a hunting dog in So Cal and not have it trained and pre bite vaccinated. its not a matter if its when they will find one and how many they will find (especially dogs used for upland hunting). Not trying to jack this thread I just feel very strongly about this issue as I have heard so many bite stories over the years .

I bought my CNF map at a past Tuneup, but you should be able to get one at a ranger station like Alpine. The BLM maps you can call or order in person at the El Centro (IV) field station.

You can also get the maps from the Goose Flats ranger station outside of Ramona. The CNF main office in Rancho Bernardo also has them.

Here is the link below. Get the fold out map ($10) as well as the spiral bound atlas ($18). They both come in handy and will give you and your dad some homework to do before you go out scouting on foot. Use google earth and google maps to get an aerial picture of the area you'll be exploring. Adds a lot.
