After a relatively slow & unproductive Saturday......Today was loaded with gobbles......At flydown we had a single hen come right in.....Yelping like crazy and gobblers gobbling.....Only problem was they were all jakes and Stefi passes on jakes......Still exciting......At 9:00 am, I decided to make a move up into the oak woods......Heard some distant gobbles, and laid into them with the slate.....Good response each time......Then it went silent (lots of the time they're moving towards you)......A good 15-20 minutes go by and apparently I dozed off because Stefi's poking me saying two birds were coming in from the valley.....I look up and it appears to be two jakes......When they got within 50 yds, I could see the beard......I tell her the front one was a tom.....He's in front and coming right to us. Then all of a sudden, he just turns right at 30 yds....No shot in about 2 steps and I tell her to shoot.....Wham!.....And he rolls over and starts to flop, but then he gets his feet and starts to run down hill.....I don't have a gun, but thankfully Jacob did.....He makes a great running shot at 49 yds.....Great combo for them on her birthday......
