So I just found out my grandparents have 5 acres near Lancaster, about a few miles south of the Lake Los Angeles area. From aerials it looks like a craptastic useless piece of land, but is nearby some ag fields, so I'm hoping it could have some doves flying. Anyone care to enlighten me on hunting possibilities up there? I have yet to check it out. An old blurry LA County shooting map seems to show that it's shotgunnable, but I need to double check. The IV is closer to me and more successful, but I want to give it a swing up there. The 150 yard rule isn't a problem as it's pretty undeveloped.

Jason,

Maybe a few jacks...5 acres is pretty small...Now, just north of there you have Tehachapi, Mojave, Scodie Mts, Jawbone Cyn, and many other areas with chukar, quail, rabbits...To the east you have duck clubs (near Edwards AFB).

Plant a 5 acre corn field. I will buy the seed if I can hunt. Hopefully you will be terrible at farming and most it will to the ground in time for dove season.
Can you plant corn in sand? That's what it looks like up there. And yes I'd be really terrible at farming.. shit will die. But hopefully it'd grow enough that doves will eat and then will die by my gunfire.

The entire state is sand, but the biggest produce producer in the country. all u have to do is and the proper nutrients and a soil blend. You'll be a sod buster in no time. Oh and water

Would a planted field be enough to draw in doves if there isn’t water nearby? Would a field in combination with some sort of guzzler draw in more doves than a field alone?

I’m in the area daily like Steve said few rabbits and ground squirrels at best

if I had the energy, money and time LOL isn't that the issue usually. I would love to plant grain and sunflowers on my property.
water would be an issue here at my place. I do have an xtra well but needs maintenance.
P.S. apple trees for the deer. and a continuous filled water trough :(

We used to hunt doves near Camp Cady when they had milo fields. Lots of doves hung around till it all died.

Was going to say just drop some of the wild sunflower out there and they'll be there. A drinker and you may get quail there. And if it's in the undeveloped area it's a decent possibility the the neighboring parcels are not posted. The LA county shoot map is pretty old and detail sucks. I don't know if it is no longer accurate but it's not enforced very strict out there. Ive encountered police, sheriff, and wardens that were fine with me hunting shotgun in an area that looks to be red out there. But then again the detail on that map is so poor I can't be sure. Good quail and chukar areas not far from there either.

Speaking of hunting out there does anybody have any experience or info hunting waterfowl on edwards?

Steve,

I hunted the Officer's Club back in the 70's...Some of my most vivid memories of the sight of literally 1000's of sprig coming in, is still etched in my mind...Larry & Eddie Anderson's dad had connections at the club.

I know years ago Ducks Unlimited did some work out there. My understanding is you've either got to be active or a veteran to hunt on base. I looked in to it about 5 years ago when I was on base doing some work in a new hanger. I was running some very large ductwork.

It says it's open to authorized members of the public... whatever that means. I don't know if that means you need to register the guns you'll use there with the base like liggett or what that means. And you need an Edwards specific hunt license? I was wondering if anybody knew what that entailed or if it's something people don't like to talk about, lol.
