The Islander 1.5 Day

Was on a trip many years ago and observed another thing skippys are good for. We had a stop that turned out to be a school of skipjack. As one of the guys was bringing in his about 5-pound skipjack a big bill came out of the water, whacked the skipjack a couple times and then a big mouth engulphed it. He had the presence of mind to put the reel in free spool and let the marlin eat it and then set the hook. For the next hour and a half we were treated to a great show as the marlin jumped about 30 or 40 times as the boat chased it all over the place. He actually got it close to the boat a couple times but not close enough to gaff it. Since he was on it with 30-pound mono and a #2 hook it finally broke off.
