Fell about 3 weeks ago getting some decoys for Otto...X rays didn't show a break, but did show show indications of a torn rotator or muscle tear in right shoulder...I literally couldn't raise my right arm and damn did it hurt...Figured the season was over...
Well, a week went by and it got to a point where I could lift my arm slightly...So, I tried picking up my 5 lb Benelli M-2 twenty gauge...Couldn't really lift it, but I could get it up enough to look down the barrel...Hell, let's give it a try at Jack's duck club...Put out a grand total of 8 decoys with a hole right in front of me...Wouldn't you know it...Every duck with the exception of one gadwall landed in the opening...Shot all 7 on the water...
Next up would be a little more challenging...San Jacinto W.A. and public hunting...Got one shot in the morning (on the water) and bagged a GW...It was very slow and the other guys decided to leave around 11:00 am...Now, it was just me and Coley...I couldn't carry decoys out...So, Cody left me one decoy, a Mallard Battleship swimmer...The 1st duck to come in was a spoondog...He didn't land, but was real close when I whacked him...Next was a green wing and then another GW...And yes, dead on the water...Then out of nowhere, a pair of mallards slid in right next to the decoy...Killed the drake on the water and the hen in the air...I just needed one more bird for a limit, when I noticed Mr. Green jeans coming down the dike...Wouldn't you know it...A GW swings by and I take a wild flying shot and bag it...#7...The old shoulder was starting to feel a little better...
Feeling slightly better and able to actually hold the gun up some, I headed for Kern with my old buddy Greenhouse (Jon)...It was terribly slow, but I got 2 spoonies flying early...I was encouraged, because I had been invited to Kern on Saturday too...
Robert and I did the tour, but there seemed to be a lot less ducks...He had a #10 res and we actually picked # 5, but the 4 blinds we wanted were all taken...So, we took Unit 2...It's all free roam and really feels like you're duck HUNTING...Unlike Wednesday, the weather was perfect...Cool, breezy, and cloudy...It wasn't wide open, but I made some good flying shots and didn't miss the couple that did land...By 3:00. we had our limits...Love that place...
ps...Barring surgery, the shoulder should be good for turkey season.......
