Trapdoor spider, they come out when it rains a lot. 
They are about as harmful as a tarantula which is to say, not very harmful at all, though they are less shy than tarantulas. I'm guessing they're pretty hardy too if it looks that good after your dog spat it out!

We have the trap door nests all over our banks surrounding the property. So not so rare in my neck of the woods. He is back up on he hill lurking around...
