I have been combing all over the DFG site and older threads here trying to get some info on how this point system works. I live in zone D15 and here are the hunts listed for the zone:

  1. Premium Deer Hunts – None
  2. Restricted Deer Hunts – None
  3. Unrestricted Deer Hunts – D15 and Archery Only (AO)

Couple of Questions I had.

Given this would I be able to go #1 Point Deer, #2 Point Deer, #3 AO? Would this allow me to collect 2 points and then hunt AO in the zone or would I lose my points as soon as I get the AO tag? The entry into the drawing price is the same price as the tag, is that right? Since these tags don't sell out would I be able to get a D15 unrestricted over the counter later or would I lose my points when the Tag is issued over the counter?

Are the points zone specific or species specific?

I am to analytical, so the simple things get in my way.

Points only on the first choice .do not lose points on second or third choice. Species specific.shoot for the stars for your first choice some tag get picked for random.

So if I choose 3 hunts for my 3 choices and don't get drawn for any of them I will receive one deer point. Can I then apply for an AO tag over the counter and keep my point?

I think I got it now, I was getting Drawings, tags, and choices confused. So I can either end up with 1 point and 1 tag for the season, or 2 tags if available or lucky. So for the initial drawing I am looking to pull a hunt or a point for my first tag slot, and then use my second tag slot later in the summer to pick up an AO or an unsold over the counter.

Put in for a premium hunt as your first choice. Then D15 as your second choice.
In the unlikely event you get drawn you get to hunt a good zone. If you don’t get drawn you’ll get one point and awarded your second choice. As long as the D15 didn’t sell out in the drawing on first go around.
If you put in for a point only you still have to pay for the tag and they will send you a letter after the drawing allowing you to get a leftover tag.
I wouldn’t even bother with the AO tag until after the drawings. Last year there was tens of thousands leftover.

AO tag will be bow only. During the general archery and general season
Forked horn or better...
Are All always available. As LP said.
What I like to do is hunt with a general season tag. I get the best of both types of hunt. First bow then rifle. But you can't use rifle and a bow , one or the other during general season.
No rifle with Archery.
Hope I am clear.

I'm confused. Why would you think you can't use both methods of take during the General Season?

I mean, you have to wait until the General Season in order to have rifle as a possible choice.

But if you wanted, you could totally have one over each shoulder during the General Season dates part of the tag, right?

I don't remember anything in the regs saying you couldn't opt for either/or during the General Season dates.

Besides... just doesn't make sense logically. They love it if you chose to use Bow during the General Season dates, for then your probabilities of getting a Deer decrease somewhat due to the proximity constraints. They would freaking love that! More money for less deer taken? That has California written all over it!

'dog,

You can use any legal means during the general season....Bow, Rifle, or cross bow....In fact, it's the only time you can use a cross bow unless your HC.

I've seriously considered the possibility of doing those forms to be allowed to use a crossbow for archery. But for now I'm still sorta "OK" with my compound bow dropped down to 54 Lbs. Just not sure how much longer that will last though. Shoulders have been buggin' hard last 5 years or so.

It's allowed if you get your doctor to fill out a form certifying you have a medical condition which prohibits you from using a regular bow.
Yes if you are handicap. And can't draw an acrhery bow.
Fill out a form doctor has to sign it.
But other than that not allowed.
