hey guys so after building points for a future elk hunt in AZ, ive been looking into some OTC action in AZ. im going to try some winter Jav around Tucson and some Couse otc near the border. anyone interested? i got some safe camping areas around the units ill be in. never hunted in AZ. ill be going every other weekend for JAV and Deer season and have a long weekend set for my bday from dec 19 to 22.

let me know if anyone is interested.

Pretty sure Javelina doesn’t open up until January. The best deer OTC will be mid January. Also i would not waste my time in two units. Draw a Javelina tag in the OTC deer unit you want to hunt. Then you can hunt deer and take advantage of Javelina if you see them.

I don’t ever want to discourage anyone. But, if you’re looking at the Coues units south of Tucson just know that it’s a solid 8 hour drive from San Diego. I’ve been all over that country. For a two day weekend I wouldn’t bother, unless you just don’t sleep. I agree with Truduct that you should just pick one unit that you can hunt both in. The four day weekend is worth it. Maybe consider one of the closer units that you can hunt mule deer in for your two day weekends? If you’re super motivated to make it happen on Coues though, don’t let me stop you.

ive driven to owens river to fish a day and come back to work the next day. im wired a little different.

:joy:….Used to drive to hunt deer in Bridgeport (X-12 these days) on Friday....Hunt Saturday, a little Sunday morning, and then drive home....No freeways in those days either....Every week-end!

Hell, yesterday I hunted from dark to dark and drove home (7+ hours)….:p

.

If you're south of Tucson and never been there... how do you know the camping is safe? Just letting you know that I wouldn't camp in some places down there and I'm ok camping with bears on Kodiak Island. Use your scouting trips wisely to find safe camping spots. Ed F

I go for javelina and Coues deer. I grew up down in that country. We'll be weekend hunting (trying to save my time off for fishing, elk, antelope, deer, etc). If you don't have a spot, you're welcome to tag along.

I’ve got some safe places near the border. Isn’t that an oxymoron?
