Anyone Quail Archery Hunt?

Anyone quail archery hunt? May try an evening session tomorrow, sounds challenging. I have never hunted quail but know where they are. Now if I can hit them is another story. I probably should of drove up north for grouse and gave myself a larger target.

Wondering how many arrows I am going to lose..... 6 pack?

Hey Trap, as long as it's not in the Bow or General season for Deer, Let's hit it with the Shotguns. Do you have a Modified choke for that short-barreled one you have? Heck, come to think about it actually you probably would be fine with Improved Cylinder.

Going to lose arrows like golf balls, but not sure if I need flu flu fletching. Are quail considered “migratory game birds”? If so I will need to use the fletching. The bow needs to be slowed down anyway, I wonder if I should have it turned down also or leave the draw weight the same. Going to have the bow shop make me 12 in the morning so I can lose 6 and have 6 for another time.

The shotgun has a skeet choke in it, came with it. I don't think I can choke it to much using steel shot without the barrel swelling, smaller shot may be different.

Archery open till Sept 6th, Oct 19 to Jan 26 general season on quail with shot guns. D12 archery season for deer doesn't open till Oct 5. Going to AO the other zones until then and scare the deer out into the desert.

Planning this archery quail and see if I can squeak out an archery bear and a dove hunt before AO deer opens on the 7th. All are 2-3 hour drives in different directions. Who knew gas money is my biggest hunting expense. Its ok though, come November the raccoons paying for gas!

Should I get Judo blunts or sharps for quail?

Went to the archery shop to get the flu flu arrows made, they let me shoot a few and really puts the brakes on, like a 6” drop over 20 yards, he said after 20 yards it will really slow down. If you shoot them in the air they will go up fast and then drop like a parachute. Makes sense now, i was thinking every shot will be a lost arrow the way the arrows were setup i was going to use. The feathers are also really large and putting a visable color on them will make them a little easier to find. They are going to scrape down my old arrows and put the feathers on them and I picked up 6 new Carbon Storm arrows. Hopefully be done tomorrow.





There was a whisker biscuit rest on my bow when I bought it and it wont work with the flu flu arrows so had them add a Hoyt Fall Away and tune me up. I like it so far, just takes some getting used to.




I ordered the judo Blunt broadheads and should be here tomorrow. Asked them about which to use, blunts or sharps, and they told me the sharps would just tear a bird up coming off a compound bow and blunts would be better to use.

Looking forward to this hunt, delayed a few days, but didn't forsee the re-gear. Learn something new everyday.

I can’t imagine hitting a quail with an arrow. Sounds impossible. Didn’t know you could shoot them in August either.

Shoot them on the ground. Judos won't skip so bad, they just flip over. Flu flu arrows are for mid air but that shit is black magic traditional bow shit

Hopefully with those Judo points the arrows will flip over when they hit the ground. Even though, you'll still have to really keep a keen eye on them after release to ensure you recover them, what with that layer of oak leaves and other soft stuff on top of it all in the soil in certain habitats.

ive been known to take a shot at a quail every now and then. without luck. get ready for 30 plus yard shot at an area the aize of a dollar coin. i would imagine if you hit them in the body the meat will be lost. all the shots ive missed have gone just over them or they jump my strings. worse than jackrabbit. you can try to ambush them but the moment they know you are there or here you drawback or something they fly away.

i might go out to one of my spots and try it again. and yea you might loose some arrows here in there. so just stick some some cheap ones.
for point i use blunt broad heads. i use these. slobberknockers. they run about 15 for a 4 pack. these shoot straight! wont break like jodos.

you will still lose arrows but not as many.. take little ping balls and hang them with string , practice shooting them at close range....
better take xtra every thing on your hunts.. arrows will be lost... they love to hide under grass and weeds.. lol

very cool, I use spent 223 cartridges on old arrows, believe it or not I have better luck with traditional bows.. it's quicker than compound..
edit: quicker at aiming & shooting lol I was the only kid in the block who hit the flying pig at the balboa range. 3 d shoot

Thanks for showing the transformation of the bow to shoot flu's. I've been wanting to get a pheasant hen to go with my gallo at home and I believe that's the only way legally to harvest one.. or a hawk hunt but I don't have a hawk .
I need to do this to my bow but I will wait till d12 is over.
