took the 6 month old weiner out to chase rabbits for the first time today. she did good. stayed by my side the whole time and never flinched when i shot a few rounds. only saw two cotton tails and a jack but too far for her to see and chase. but overall was a good hike and day for her. did bump a doe at 25 yards. so that was cool. the rabbits are definitely scarce this year compared to previous years

Love the pic! We have five weiner dogs in the immediate family... down to only two living in our house full time now. They are undoubtedly bred to hunt! They go nuts when they tree a squirrel in the back yard. Last night Tim had a rat up in a plum tree a I had to forcibly bring him in the house. Of course, I first took a look with a spotlight and Crossman in hand first, but to no avail. He once caught a young possum and it was insane (almost scary) watching him give that thing the lightning-fast death shake! I have a 12 X 6 foot quail pen in the back yard and Belle spends a good portion of her day running circles around it scratching and whining in hopes of catching one some day. She is obsessed! That said, I have (half jokingly) wondered about taking them in the field. They have great noses and I would imagine them being helpful in finding downed birds. Maybe even being trained to retrieve? I'm concerned about rattlesnakes and predators and the possibility that they would chase a rabbit into the next county and never be seen again... or just get lost in the brush. They are great companions. Just wondering if you have had other experience hunting with dachshunds?

this was the first experience i had with taking a dog out in the field. i had a dachshund when i was a kid that would go run the fields by my house and chase rabbits and coyotes all day long till we got home with our dobermans. my new dachshund loves chasing lizards at the apartments. i think she will do well chasing rabbits also. she’s a big baby so i’m not really worried about her running away and not coming back. she never really got farther than 10 - 15 ft away from me when we were out there but i think the more i take her out the better she will do. i was thinking about getting her some rattlesnake training cause i think if she did see one she might go after it. was hoping to get a rabbit that day so she could get a smell for them.

i wish i had more time to take her out and train her but with a 4 year old son to watch on the weeknd’s it makes it hard to get out as much as i’d like

This is Mike the Dog (With Yeager the lab)...His mother was a standard sized dachshund...Really don't know what the old man was, but he came out the size of a beagle...He absolutely was one of the best, if not the best upland dog I ever owned...He only barked at 3 things...Quail, chukar, and pheasant...I owned Mike in my younger years and could keep up with him...He could go all day and basically hunted for himself...He did not retrieve, but he would find downed birds in short order...If you got there late, he would try to bury it...:joy:

The point being, dachshund blood is hunters blood... ;)
