Went to the IV for the quail opener yesterday. My regular buds couldn’t make it so I took my brother Dennis, “the fish whisperer” with me. He’s not a hunter but he came to fish the canals while I hunt. So I opened OnX and found all of my marks, then zoomed in and found the ones close to fishable canals. The idea was that he could fish while I hunt. Neither of us have much experience fishing down there.

Gentleman’s start, we arrived at 9:00 am at one of my most reliable quail spots. Weather was warm and sunny.

As I’m changing out flip flops for my boots, Dennis throws a line in the canal and bam, instant hookup.

I spent two hours crisscrossing the 100 acre field and found only one small covey. WTH? Couldnt even get a shot at them. Had the field to myself, so I’m thinking maybe other guys arrived at dawn and shot up the place already, and left before we arrived.

Then at 11:00 the 45% chance of rain became 100% and it dumped for at least an hour. High winds and major downpour. We found the nearest paved road and waited it out. Afterwards everything was a muddy mess. Went to the next quail spot on my list and it’s now posted. Too muddy to walk in anyway. Fished a few spots and caught cats and tiny bass. Looked around for some ECDs but zero were flying after the storm.

Gave up on quail due to mud. Finished the day at a reliable ECD spot next to a promising fishing spot. After seeing only two mourning dove in about 45 minutes, I walked over right next to the nearby feed lot and fired a shot (away from the cows). A thousand black birds come out and not a single dove. Gave up and fished. The storm ruined hunting after about 11 am.

Dennis finished with a limit of nice catfish. I did something Ive never accomplished before - I went to the IV and didn’t kill a single bird. Fired one shell, and it wasn’t even at a bird lol. Still had fun fishing and hanging with bro. No Bad Days Fishing.

What did Dennis catch the cats with? That is very nice for an IV canal cat.

Last week I went out to one of my known quail hangouts, zero birds. My friends in Az. went to one of their know quail hang out, zero birds. We really needs some rain come early spring or it will only get worst, if it's possible to worst than zero birds.

For us the IV has been the place to go during drought because of the constant water supply and green growth (green shoots, seeds, and bugs). I wonder what the issue is making it possibly a down year? Of course one bad weather trip doesn’t prove much.

I don’t know what happened to my reply Doc, it got all conflated with my reply to Steve.

Cats were caught on shrimp, mostly in the East Highline. 2 other cats were about a pound larger than the one in the pic.
