Zeroing

Hey guys for the longest I've been zeroing my scope at the lowest power. My new friend told me x reason (accuracy) that I need to zero at max, my scope is a 4-12, so zeroing at 12. Problem perfect eye relief at 4, but i tunnel at 12. My question, do i need to move my scope to have perfect eye relief at 4x and 12x.

No, as long as you get a good zero.

He was maybe confusing it with a second focal plane scope which the hash marks (not zero) will be effected by the power you are zoomed to.

Unfortunately, I've checked my box and it is a second focal plane scope.

With SFP scopes, zero at highest magnification, in your case 12. Then At setting lower than 12, the spacing for hold over changes. Most scopes sold today are SFP, unless you specially shop for FFP scopes, which you may want if you are long range hunting or just long range shooting.

You shouldn’t be tunneling like you said at all. Adjust the scope forward or back till that’s not an issue. If your scope rings are not the proper height too low or high that could cause this issue as well. The max magnification will just help you zero in on a specific aim point for scope adjustment and this wouldn’t matter for SFP or FFP zero is zero.

Always set up your eye relief at full power. That way you are good throughout the entire magnification range

I second this. If you set your eye relief perfect at your highest magnification, you should be good at the lowest. It may even take a few tries. Often, I find that what feels like perfect eye relief behind the rifle in the garage ends up not working when I actually go to shoot.
