    NWTF Meeting Jan 22nd, 2019

Any thoughts on what areas of help will be needed for the Turkey Tune Up? We will all be ready to sign up as support at the NWTF meeting on Tuesday but a list of tasks could help in advance. For example, I’m not a good choice for turkey calling but if there are tasks like ‘parking lot...

    When to Upgrade

I added 15x binos this week. Next year will be all about looking at greater ranges and then moving in. Nothing like a great January to get excited for all of 2019!

Trout being stocked locally. Good time to fish if you’re not water fowling

Some trophies being stocked at Lake Poway. I usually go for catfish when there (they bite any time of day) but will bring out the powerbait this weekend to catch a trout or two. Cottontail season ends 01/27 and Quail is similar. Now is the time to fill up on trout until Turkey season. Monday...

The copper bullet are they up to the quick kill.

It looks like I’ve got two good options for non-toxic 243. If either of these group well for my Savage Axis then I’m all set for D16 in 2019. Both are 90grain non-lead.

The copper bullet are they up to the quick kill.

Good detail on benefits of copper in larger grained bullets. Any insights into 243s? I’ve seen that copper for 243 will max out at 85grains vs. 100grains for lead. I’m not informed yet (I’ll get that info this year) but I’m concerned that the transition from lead to copper will make 243s not...

    Tuscon Jan 21-25th

Consider doing the AZ hunter safety class while you are there (or before you go). It will give you one preference point for tag draws each year. Truduct is the most knowledgeable on this subject. So he is best to answer questions. I haven’t hunted AZ yet but my sister lives in Oro Valley (North...

    Am I overthinking this??

@Bronkorob for the question on Oak Grove, I believe that is within the Palomar Ranger District and so it would be good to call their office 760-788-0250. They will be able to tell you the best ways to access CNF and where to park. The gal at the front desk knows a lot or she may transfer you to...

    South Carolina

I hunt each year for a week in the Northern end of SC (30miles south of Charlotte, NC). There are certainly an abundance of deer and hunting is a well respected activity every Fall. Deer season starts around September 1st and goes until January 1st at sundown. I don’t know about hunting on...

SC deer hunt during holiday family gathering

Visited family in Charlotte, NC between Christmas and New Years. My brother-in-law is an avid hunter and each year at this time we make it a point to hunt while the families are getting together. This year I don’t have a significant report from the hunt but I always enjoy it when others write up...

Deer pics were taken around 11:30am. So they really are out at mid day sometimes.

Band Tail & Dove hunting turned into 2019 deer scouting

@SDLIVIN and I went back for Band Tails after only getting one shot off last week. Saw only a few but it was still good being out in the local mountains. Figured out which way the band tails usually dodge and so the Dec 2019 season will be a huge improvement for us. Then went for some local dove...

Breakfast after Band Tails on Saturday

Had a good hunt today with @SDLIVIN, @steveo007, and @SurfNHuntSD. Great weather on the mountain. Band tails were scarce yet we each had some chances. Didn’t limit out but a good hunt always ends with everyone looking forward to the next hunt (dropping some yotes in January, and then the turkey...

    Trail cam pictures

Awesome. Would he be considered a 4x2? I also like the trees in the background. Nothing like hunting deer on the side of a timber filled mountain.

Breakfast after Band Tails on Saturday

If any SCH members are going to be near the Lake Henshaw resort on Saturday around 10am we could grab breakfast. I think there will be a number of us in the area (maybe not as many as opening weekend of D16 but still a festive time of year).

    Time is short...make it count

Dove season ends Dec 24th. Rabbit (cottontail) season ends January 27th. Quail (if you Are lucky enough to find) ends Jan 27th. This is a great time of year. Go for rabbits and dove (with a wild hair for quail if present). Bring in a weekend’s worth of meals in a single outing. Don’t just wait...
