    Closing Wednesday

My last hunt of the season was today. I only had a couple of hours then I had to work. Took Montana. We got 4 and headed home. Nice day. Wister was shooting crap on the North End. Nice mix. John

    Fun Lab Day

So, true. You can just focus on the experience. Calling the ducks in and watching them work. Watching the dogs as you start calling and they know it really is game time. Then again, they are the masters of non verbal communication and you know when they are pissed when you miss. There is just...

    Looking for another dog

Not sure where you live but I would call your local Navda Chapter and see if they have leads. There are really good retriever clubs in most hunting states. I would contact one of them as well. I have always gotten good recommendations from people I know in the Lab community. Then again, Nikita...

    Fun Lab Day

Hunted with both the girls today. Grey sky's all day. I left when it just started to rain. Hunted just North of Wister. They were shooting good. Pic of the Lab looking out the blind is Nikita. Wondering why we don't shoot Coots. Second one is my Senior Lab. Montana just has that look when I...

Worth Hunting Ducks in the Rain?

Wister sucks in the rain. I have always done well at SJ in the rain. Just need to get into the right area. Many places hunt well in the rain. Not going to list them. John

    San Jacinto-Dec.24th

I heard them shooting in the Fs. We ran my Lab and Jay's. So, no lost birds for us. John

    San Jacinto-Dec.24th

Hunted SJ on the 24th with Jay. I took Nikita. We had to leave by 1100am but still did well. Slow day but we made the most of it and did way better than most. Merry Christmas. John

    Workouts 2023

Jog hills if you can. Walk them if you cant. Flat terrain walks at low elevation will not help. At least not over 10,000 feet. Walking hills with your actual hunting backpack with some weight on it makes sense. Hunting with young guys that you can guilt into carrying extra weight from your pack...

    Aloha

Fished Maui from the beach. You can buy dead squid and even small octopus for bait. I do not believe you will need a fishing license to fish off the beach. There are freaking big fish that the locals target at night. I know there are deer on several of the islands but not sure about the one you...

    Christmas Eve. Day - busy?

I think I am hunting SJ on the 24th. I am sure it will be busy but I bet most will only hunt the morning. Likely the same at Wister. You should be able to get on. John

    Stranded Hunter Salton Sea

Yeah, I get that way when I am seeing nothing but Bluebills and Buffleheads. John

    Stranded Hunter Salton Sea

Another good reason to hunt with two Labs. 300 feet from shore? Rope the Labs and pitch a dead duck for shore. Hold on and repeat until you reach the beach. Seriously? The guy didn't bring a set of oars? Has to be more to the story. John

This is why I like 'fowling and dogs

It is all about the dogs for me. John

    Dilemma

I would hunt SJ. A 10 is good and a draw is hard to get there. They are hunting pretty good. Wister is great but SJ is quite a difference. You will not get lost. They will tell you what blinds are good. You will not have to worry if it rains. Dog is good because you get into areas with deeper...

There's a problem on the mountain

Bandtail season is just around the corner. I will bring Bear Mace and a fully charged Cattle Prod. Either one should keep them away. John
