2021 UT Youth Hunt Blog

We got close on a buck last night wind shifted and it was all over.
Got on a group of three bucks this morning. when we got one ridge from where we needed to set up the first hunter have seen came walking down the bucks ridge and blew them out. Taking the boys on a death march now gonna find a toad somewhere. Stay the course.

Well this is turning into a lot harder hunt than expected. Winds were around 20mph + this morning even the moo cows were bedded down. Long story short we didn’t see a deer. According to some townies “this is the worst deer season they have seen in over a decade”. Stay the course.
blew a tire out had to drive an hour to town to the nearest discount tire to get that changed. Hoping they have it done for in time for us to get an evening hunt. We are in the red zone time to finish.

Don't give up faith. Is that a general tag? I think I looked over roughly 90 does and 1 spike before killing the general buck in my avatar last year. Those hunts aren't easy.

Ya general hunt. If we can find him we will kill him.

Get em!

If its of any help (you may know most/all of this), we were out there a week later then you (closer to the rut). We kept moving until we found the most does in a certain area. When we did, we kept checking in on them and as many different herds of does as possible until one evening the 4x4 showed up with them and I let him have it. That may work for you. I hope the boys smash a couple. We also found significantly more deer on edge country and close to burns.

Killers are gonna kill…….
Windy and freezing this morning glassed up the same three bucks 950yds away that got bumped two days ago. We throw on the packs and start hoofing it over there.
We get to 385 yards and decide to set up because I was able to get him prone. 13yo is a killer from prone. 3 bucks in the open broadside. A decent 3x, a small fork, and a legal spike.
We are shooting up hill so I set his browning Hells Canyon 308 up on a bipod on top of my pack and dial him in. The sun is in our eyes and we have a good head wind. I tell him when you get him in the crosshairs dump him. Boom thwap the buck is dead in his tracks rolling down the hill. The other two move up the hill and we are scrambling to get the 15yo a double. I didn’t dial him back enough and he goes right under the buck. They gone.
Now here is where it gets good and the reason why I love hunting with kids. You would assume that you always shoot the biggest buck. Well we get up there and there is the monster spike laying there dead. Anything longer than 5” is legal over here so we are good to go but man this is a good campfire story.
We got him all processed and both boys packed him 3 ridges and about a mile to the truck. The pack probably weighed more than the 13yo it was great, he was miserable.
Now we are in town eating burgers, drinking shakes and buying ice. We are gonna be back at it this evening and a few hours in the morning before we pack up. One more to go and it ain’t over until it’s over.
