Hello Bucakroos,

I have a 22lr waiting to go hunting. I bought the 22lr rifle before finding out that you can't hunt small game with a 22lr in Los Angeles County.

My question is, can I hunt national forest with a 22lr? I know Angeles National forest is off limits due to county ordinance, but are all other National Forests permissible? I want to try and hunting rabbit near a forest. I also, know gray squirrels are off limits in southern cal.

I have the San Bernardino shooting map, but still question National Forests.

All advice is welcome.

Thanks

Pretty sure you can in the Cleveland national forest but I'll let others more knowledgeable than I speak up.

I may be wrong, but I think you can shoot that . 22 in any national forest. including Angeles during hunting season...I mean, I shot a deer in ANF with my old .308...So, I'm thinking a .22 would be ok... ;)

Key restrictions
  • County ordinance: The County of Los Angeles has an ordinance that prohibits shooting firearms in the unincorporated territory within the Angeles National Forest, with the exception of hunting during designated seasons.
  • Hunting regulations: Hunting is permitted in most of the forest, but not everywhere. You must have a valid California hunting license and adhere to all state and federal regulations.
  • Designated no-firearm zones: Some specific areas, like the Chilao Recreation Complex, are designated as no-firearm zones due to county ordinances.
  • Prohibited areas:
    • You cannot shoot within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, or developed recreation site.
    • Shooting is not allowed across or on a National Forest System road or a body of water adjacent to it.
    • You cannot shoot into or within any cave.

Thanks for the response. I found this online:

Barclays California Code of Regulations
Title 14. Natural Resources
Division 1. Fish and Game Commission--Department of Fish and Game (Refs & Annos)
Subdivision 2. Game, Furbearers, Nongame, and Depredators
Chapter 2. Resident Small Game
14 CCR § 311
⏬

§ 311. Methods Authorized for Taking Resident Small Game.

(g) In addition to the methods listed in (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), and (f) above, firearm rifles and pistols may be used for taking rabbits and squirrels only; except in Los Angeles County where rifles and pistols may not be used.

Is national forest exempt from this?

I don't have any idea how to interpret half the bullshit they come up with. I feel bad for my 7 year old son.
