Another great hunt with Jacob...I didn't hunt this property for a few years because it just wasn't near the X...A year ago birds started getting closer and even on the property...This year, they weren't very close and there had been no sign...With a lot of places getting stagnant...It was worth a try....
We heard gobbles starting at about 5:30 am...Not a gobblefest, but a good steady amount at 300-400 yds away...We were too far to hear the flydown, but the quietness quickly let us know, they were on the ground and probably with hens...Something I rarely do is, call before flydown...Because of the distance, I was on the loudest box call I have (Flydown Custom Single Sider)...At about 6:45 am, I got what I thought was our 1st response to the box...Waited awhile and hit 'em again...Sure enough, he responded...I called sooner the next time and he cut me off...We're in business..........
30 minutes went by and we only heard him two more times, but he was closer and moving to the left...Where we were set up is kind of thick and to get to us, he would have to take one of two dirt roads to even be close...Moving left meant, he was on or near one of the those dirt roads...We then get complete silence and Jacob and I agreed, he's moving...Finally, we see him below us and he makes the right turn to come up to where the DSD hens are (I'm soft calling)...The grass is tall and he goes up periscope, but he must've like those girls, because he goes into full strut and waltzes in...After he dances around them, he stuck his neck out...Good night now!........,
ps...Jacob was shooting his Franchi Affinity 3, 20 gauge with TSS...Great load, but if you shoot a little low and forward...You can kiss the beard good bye...3rd time this season.......
