A zone buck down (hopefully)

sorry man that really sucks. if you have not done this & if you do go back do radius search where the track or blood was last found. work your way starting close then circle around. if that does not work check & walk all the main trails. they are creatures of habit. some of my friends had suggested to look for water cause the deer will go there to drink when wounded. if there mountain lion tracks it's good chance it took it. because they smell the blood for miles. another good trick is get a spray bottle fill it full of hydrogen peroxide, & spray near where the last blood trail was because even a minute amount of not visible blood will bubble & fizz.. check the leaves good cause they flip over. try not to walk on the trail. because it destroy possible minute blood spots. Use tape markers to locate each blood spot found. I hope this helps as suggestions. if you have done all this and more then you have done every thing possible. and it happens to the best of us. don't give up.however two miles is a long tracking and it is possible it's a flesh wound. good placement shot & that deer should not have gone more than 150 yards.

Find some one else who has a dog and get out there.......he's there with a belly full of blood! Watch the birds they will tell you where he's at.

Good luck
Wow that's a great point about getting help from the buzzards. Also the point about a belly full of blood. That's agony for the beast.

It's not looking good. We haven't seen a bird circling and haven't seen any blood. I've been up and down the canyon we last saw blood 10 times and not a thing. I won't be able to make it back up tomorrow due to work. We called it a day and are heading home. I'm going to go up next weekend and hunt around a spring that close to where I shot him. Maybe I will get lucky and see him again if he's still alive.

Keep your head up Taft, it sounds like you gave it all that you could. Flesh wounds bleed pretty good initially and then stop. I'm hopeful that you'll see this buck again. Good luck!

TH,

It happens to every bow hunter.

Nothing I can say will make you feel better. But, my 1st year of bow hunting I lost a 2 bucks. Well, 1 1/2.....The 1st one I hit very low......Found blood, then nothing......I saw him again alive & well.

The 2nd buck was the same year on the last day of the season......He was hit good and bled like crazy. Then it dried up after about 125 yds......He was found on a neighbors property later on.......I was not allowed to retrieve it.

It was tough after never losing a buck with a rifle.......Remember nothing goes to waste in the wild.

Hang in there.

Might want to leave the dogs at home during archery season. Even if its tracking you are pursuing the deer. Section 265(a)1.The use of dogs is prohibited during the archery seasons for deer or bear

You know that would never go down legally.. Under the court of law I would be screwed.. There is more non hunters than hunters. You couldn't win even if you were right buddy.

I sure did. I lost the biggest buck of my life and the first buck with a bow...

I call the warden or the office and tell them what's going on and then we go. I got to know a few good wardens and one little guy from Julian with an attitude that's an ass

Most of the time they just say leave the bow in the truck and blood track the deer.

Dogs are legal to hunt deer just not during the general archery. It's nice to have a dog flush the deer out of the canyons and right to you looking away.

Ya I was not sure what the wardens take on using dogs to track a wounded deer. that's why I did not endorse it myself. how ever if you have a tracking dog. It is a valuable asset in the bag of tools. lot less deer would be lost.
maybe something us hunters could push for. to retrieve wounded deer.
to have a clearer wording of the law to permit it.
it sometimes becomes the wardens views.
My uncle had an hound dog it would have 99% success rate.
This case would be to track with out any bow equipment.
