Oh man a limit of seagulls, I wish I was there to see that! You’d think after picking up the first seagull he would’ve thought to himself, “this thing isn’t very gooselike.”way back in 1976 i was just a peanut size lil guy and my dad took me to wister to watch him hunt. A guy a few dykes over shot a bird way way up and it sailed over to our side. You could hear the guy screaming MY BIRD BY BIRD! My dad a pretty bad ass dude said son if i kick this guys ass do not tell your mom. The dude ran over and picked up his bird and my dad in his sarcastic f you voice said " son you better run back now" he did and that was that. Later that day a guy had a limit of snows at the check station. warden was very impressed as no one had brought in a limit of sea gulls all day.
i knew then that duck hunting was for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. that was the lats time i ever set foot on wister . the old man did some work for some mobsters that duck hunt and we got invited to the LCRA
When my dad and I started duck hunting three years ago we didn’t know what blinds to pick because it had been over 20 years since my dad had duck hunted at Wister and San J. I’ve gotten good draws for all the youth hunts so we’ve learned of a few good blinds at San J. Last year we had a couple good hunts at Wister as well. It adds to the excitement of drawing a reservation once you know about a few good blinds. I bet the new guys were happy about the list you speak of and thats about it. I guess Mendota guys don’t have that problem, they just have to worry about getting out to their spot before anyone else.As sad as it sounds, the crew a Wister needs to tighten up and get with the program.
1. The PM staff had a list with top blind results and were telling EVERYONE what blinds shot best when they asked. Even allowing people to take pictures of the list. I know bc they showed me and the guy told me to take a picture.
2. They were helping everyone in the morning with which blinds to pick. Put the time in and learn the refuge, if you don’t know, pick and learn. Sucks when your next in line and the guy working the site gives your spot away to the guy who asked “where should I go”.
I used to know a guy named Wally Gober ( he has passed ), he was an insurance salesman and could sell ice cubes to eskimos in his day. He worked as a guide during the season in the valley and specialized in snows. He used a call that had a particuler sound to it that the geese could not resist, It was called a ha,ha, call and made by a local. He told me a couple of stories where some of the "Good fella's" came out to shoot and the snow's would commit suicide on the decoy's. The"boy"s had no sense of limits or hours and he had to leave the blind several times to preserve his guide license. There was a cleaning service in the valley back then and they would bring in a pick up truck load from the blind to be cleaned and would make the processing folks "a deal you could not refuse"way back in 1976 i was just a peanut size lil guy and my dad took me to wister to watch him hunt. If someone gets a good draw and is new, is Tom supposed to let them pick a crappy blind and waste their reservation? Reservations are hard to draw as everyone knows. I understand it would be frustrating if they recommend the blind you were going to pick to a new guy. But wouldn’t it also be frustrating if you’re the new guy and the staff lets you waste your reservation on a crappy blind and doesn’t give any recommendations? Then youd hate sj and the help Tom gives to ppl triin to learn.sucks to hunt public bro. My dad says that years ago when he used to hunt San J they didn’t have the hogwire blinds, is that true?It is a given Tom will suggest the best blinds available...Have a back-up site, on a back-up site, on a back-up site, when going there...Just part of the public hunting game.
ps...Great reason to go to the work parties at San J...Get to know the area/sites, meet guys that may give you a tip, or may even invite you on a Ressie.
