Had planned to hunt the SBDO NF but realized the area we had targeted burned very recently so last minute went to the local CNF where quail have been fairly common on my rabbit hunts. I guess someone tipped off the birds because they were absent today. Heard some calling but they were way up the side of a mountain - unhuntable. Talked to four other hunters and heard about three quail total shot in the area, most flushed by dogs. Fire service guy said everyone he talked to reported slow hunting. Buddy had to get back for a wedding so called it early. Will try desert spots soon but couldn’t today because of the wedding. Hope others had better luck!

Kevin,

Amazing how those quail can disappear.
It’s uncanny how they seem to know when the season starts and also where hunt/no hunt boundaries are. The only birds we saw were crossing the road into a guys front yard in Rancho Capistrano! Haha

But we did meet a really nice hunter named Jim with a beautiful Brittany Spaniel who shared some intel for next time, and as usual had a great time just tromping through the outdoors on a beautiful morning.

Yep I see a lot in spring then in late fall poof gone. It seems they like to go high in the hills. CNF quail that is.

I hunted imperial where I saw quail All dove season. I didn’t fire a shot in two days. I couldn’t believe it.

Man that sucks! Always see quail when I’m down there. Maybe I’ll wait until 2nd dove season to go again so I have another option if quail aren’t there.

Hunted deer this weekend. Had quail yelling/running up and down the hill in front of me. I busted out the phone and hit google translate app. They were shouting "stay close to the people sitting down with skinny sticks!"

Yes the thought went through my head- 308 would vaporize one.

Had the same thing happen to me somewhat. Had a spot picked for my first hunt, fires came in, an my hopes of bagging my first limit of quail flew away with the birds smh..
