Count down to dove season!

Sept 1st is a love hate deal. Love the gunshot start to the coming fall season. Football, cool temps, big game, glassy surf, excellent fishing, kids are back in school so crowds are down. Hate the heat, elbow to elbow shooting, and is it really "hunting"? Yes, its hunting. A special slot or niche.

In the olden days I would camp out in the back of my truck and catch catfish until I was too tired to keep at it. Sweat to death in the high 90s or low 100s all night, wait for sun up , blast doves, and go home. Now I'm old and fat and enjoy a bed and shower and AC, Sportscenter, and a refrigerator full of C-, Keystone, and Hamms.

My daughter crushes her own birds with her own gun. Shes been in the field since 6 years old. Got her license at 8. Older sister got her license at the same time at 11. Wife got her license this spring, and got her own turkey. All make great hunting partners, and doves is a fun way to get outside and do something. My daughter has a limit of doves, a few quail, a pair of pheasants, and some turkeys under her belt. Even whacked band-tailed.

Some catch Pokemons, my girls catch fish and critters. Pass it on.

2016 goals: Get my first D16 buck. Toss out a decoy spread and get ducks and geese. Quail and doves. Try and get band-tailed. Last year they were almost gone. The year before that there were thousands.

Jon,

Welcome to SCH......Yes, the Imperial Valley/Salton Sea areas are still huntable.....Unless of course, it's posted.

Here's a map of the DFW Heritage Upland Game Bird Fields.......Remember, STEEL SHOT IS REQUIRED on these areas, Wister, & Finney-Ramer.

.

out of curiosity what are those other red dots on the map in the top right corner of the first page this document? see how there is a red box with one red dot in it and along the 8 highway map there are other red dots.

I have no idea.....I can tell you, they're not more Heritage fields.....This pic was taken at one of the DFW fields today.....;)

Steve those Picts are great.

I'm sure and I hope that lots and lots of Guys take advantage or the dfw fields. It's a good opertunity for new guys that haven't scouted to meet other new and non scouting hunters and learn to sit shoulder to shoulder and practice safe gun handling

Doug,

It can be pretty hairy at dark thirty and the mourning doves are flying dick high.....All kinds of ways and philosophies on how to hunt in crowded areas.

Remember, you don't always have to be in the feed spot.....Edges of fields or daytime roost areas can be good too.

I don't know if this needs another thread but any one that will be out in the iv for opener want to have lunch or dinner and shake a few people's hands?

Maybe after morning hunt breakfast on Friday or Saturday? Or dinner Thursday? Dennys or something?

True GSP, I've been wanting to meet up with some of you SCH regulars for the past couple of years... maybe this year I won't be so busy ... o wait that's D16 archery right? ;-)

I might be up for a late breakfast/early lunch thing on opener. Whatever people wanna do.

I hope we can make it work. I'll be getting to the valley mid afternoon 3-4ish on Thursday. I don't know if anyone else is staying Friday or the weekend?

I work near a mill on the edge of town and for the past week I go outside at 4pm and the doves are flying (i see at least 50+ in a few minutes) in to feed. 5 days straight like clockwork give or take a couple of minutes. I don't hunt dove anymore but I was thinking this info could help a fellow hunter on what time to get out there before the evening hunt? what do you guys think, if these doves are moving around 4 here do they all move around this time?

Rick,

That's about right for afternoon hunts most anywhere.....Mourning doves fly at dark-thirty in the morning (& low) & can water after shoot time......Euros and white-wing fly a little later in the morning.

On the subject of mourning doves flying low.....Be careful early in the morning. The only guys I know that have been shot were at this time.....If in doubt, don't shoot.......It's only a dove.....Not worth putting someone's eye out.

ps.....EVERYONE should wear shooting glasses while dove shooting.

It'll be a hot one as always! Limit out early, then hit breakfast!
