So now that the upland season is over how did everybody do?

Was definitely one of my best seasons with 120 birds in total mixed between dove, quail, my first bandtails, which I took limits of each during the season. And nine of that total were the the devils bird themselves, chukar. So I'm pretty happy with how the season as a whole ended up for me.

Season was great, my problem was finding time to get out. The times I did go out I had a blast. Learned a bunch and brought home 4 quail, 2 gallos and a partridge in a pear tree.. :). A couple of yotes hit the dirt and 1 was trained. Fishing wise.. few cats, 3 stripers.

2020... try and get out more.

Steve,

You had quite the upland season. Didn't get nearly to your level but I had a good time for the few times I got out this season. Had a great dove opener (limits), duck opener (5 on opener, 6 next day), shot a deer, and mixed in a few quail, rabbits, and bandtails. Best part was getting my 5 year old daughter into it.. she'll be a way better hunter than me!

I'm not ready to stop going out even though the seasons are over and done. Plans for scouting more areas for chukar still or trying to find some pigeons or euros.

I'm still trying to get my daughter over some of the kid hurdles and pull the trigger (and not miss) on an actual bird. When I had her out for dove I got her in position and she missed one on a branch... maybe purposely. Told me if felt unfair if it wasn't flying that and I don't do that. I was like... sweetie I don't shout a .410 with and 18 and a half inch barrel... and I also don't suck. LOL. She also didn't think the steel shot out of the .410 could kill anything because it didn't kick at all compared to the lead loads. So I took her gun and proved that it could. If anybody has a girl that is around 11 they want to take out hunting next year I'd love to try and get the girls out together as the kids seem to do so much better when they have another out their own age to do it with too and it's not just a dad thing.

Come to the TTU my daughter is 11 and looking for her a buddy.

First... I'd like to say a big "Thank You!" to @SteveHazard for being willing to take a disciple under his wing! While I have a ways to go in honing my shotgunning skills, I've got to say I really enjoyed going out for Doves! Was crazy cool seeing how employing the MOJO decoy worked so well. Huge contrast to the patience-game of ambush hunting for deer. Quail was fun too!, but a bit more of a challenge due to their rocket-like nature, coupled together with the type of steeper hillside terrain we happened to have gone to.

Second... a big "Thank You!" to @TrapLine for extending the offer to tag along for Coyote (and Double-Teaming that mofo!), and then that whole other new ball of wax that is Ducks. Also a big shoutout to the several resident SCH Ambassadors (@ilovesprig and others) who were nice enough to throw a bone to two n00bs seeking to go outside of their comfort zones and take on new challenges that came with a whole bunch of new things to learn and weird, more complicated than it really should be, procedural stuff to pick-up quickly and understand. So thank you all for that.

RE: The kids. Yeah... it's weird isn't it? Also it can be an adult, just as long as it's not their own parent. That other adult can be telling them the same things. The exact same things. Even in the same way! But for some reason, when it's not you doing it... I dunno...it just penetrates thru their earhole better for some reason.

I moves from northern Mexico and now live in Oregon. This was my first season the quail hunting is real limited out here, the pheasants are only on private land and chukar provide the best opportunities due to public land access. I drive further up here than I ever did in CA to get into birds.

The best day of chukar i got into at least 10 coveys within 6 hours and 10 miles hiked. Another day was 9 coveys, the dogs did phenomenal. My shooting was not this year.

In total I hiked 275 miles and shot 22 chukar. Through out the season. My young dog was the star of the show and has turned into an amazing chukar dog. She has a great nose and is extremely steady.

My favorite day out was when my old dog 8 1/2 years was the star of the show I shot 2 birds over point and could have stopped hunting after the first bird was in her mouth. During this hunt I wanted a great photo of her on point to frame and to put a bird in her mouth so bad. I let her hold onto that bird for a couple of mins to let her just enjoy the moment with me. Shes not to old but a dog that has hunted hard her whole life I really dont know how many more seasons I will get from her.

I talked to many other chukar hunters up here and they said for my first season I did great and in a couple of years they would be asking me for spots. I learned something as well one gentleman said he would help me with some spots and I was really open where I had been hunting. Well he gave me no info other than general knowledge of areas that hold birds which becomes common knowledge with research. Anyways 2 weeks later I ran into him at a spot I had mentioned to him. I need to hold my cards closer to my chest cant trust anyone. Funny thing is I could say his name and you all would know who he is. A very popular bird hunter.20200125_155736.jpg20200125_125242.jpg20200131_145721.jpg

Not a bird guy, but those are good looking dogs, Pilgrim. It is natural to want to help others, but sometimes it doesn't work out....as you learned. Keep it up, sounds like you are on the right track.
