Imperial Valley Gambel Quail 1-5-18

With ducking so slow, I thought I would check out some of my old Gambel quail spots last Friday.....The one covey had over a 100 birds in it.....The other about 35.....All on public land.

It was late, so I didn't chase them, but if I feel better, I hope to get after them this week.

These birds don't get hunted much, if at all.....Last year this same covey had about 50 birds.

Spring rain is when it really matters.....These birds nest all summer.

Pretty much a banner year for gambles, the birds in the valley are not rain dependant like California quail are. Early warm humidity and bugs play a bigger roll i think. Water is always around the agriculture.

They are freaking hard to hunt. Masters of flushing opposite side of a bush

Them "plaster city quail" are doing really good this year. Great pics sir.
