So got skunked last 3 days in a row turkey hunting. I have pulled him from about 200 yards to within 50 yards twice. First time i kept yelping, second time quit answering him when he got close. Both times heard him gobble away.

What calls are yall making when they are in close but not quite within range?

Also I heard him flyup while scouting in the evening. Wanted to try and narrow down his roost tree but wasent sure how easy they could be bumped from their roost. Any insight?

Not that its any help but I've been having the same problem. Bead on a tom at around 50 and he just cruised off. Misery loves company I suppose.

Any roads nearby? Asking for a friend ..them Yardbirds like roads...just sayin..

John,

1st off, if your shot was clear...50 yds is WELL within range of most any TSS load...Are you using decoys?...If so, try not using them and get to a position where when he gets into view, he's in range.

If you're not using a decoy...Try using a single feeding hen 1st...The later the season goes, the less I use any kind of decoys.

As far as calling goes...Try soft purrs and clucks...Keep it to a minimum, especially in close...Remember, he expects her to come to him...When this doesn't happen, he probably is getting nervous...Curiosity killed the cat and he's still alive.

Finding the roost can really help, especially if he's alone...You may get him on flydown...If you can, don't call until he's about ready to fly down...Soft clucks with a couple of yelps mixed in.

If he does have hens...They'll probably go the opposite direction of your calling, but there's a good chance he will come back into his zone later in the morning and after losing them.

Good luck

Can he see your set up coming in. I often find as soon as they have a clear sight path you better be in range or have good decoys. I rarely call once I know they are coming in. Make him search.

Even with DSDs I try to make them get close before they can see them...even then theres alway a stuborn tom, keep trying. One day they are a PIA the next suicidal.

No clear shot, if he would of came in a line I would have but he makes a big C in the thick stuff and stays out of the open. I was using 2 hen decoys, will try without decoys next time and purr. That purr takes me a little to get warmed up before it sounds decent so i stayed away from it, going to try it. Hopefully he makes it through the weekend, back at it next week.

They don't get old by being stupid.

different calls (mouth, box or slate), line of sight to your set up, sometimes its as simple as just knowing where the turkey wants to be and not where you want him to be. Stick with him - sometimes just being persistent is the key.

Do you have gloves? Do you take that headlamp off? If not, they 100% will see those and hang up.
Yea the headlamp surely didnt help, forgot i was still wearing it after the sun came up.

I am setting up about 100 yards from the roost, Tried without decoys this time but he just didnt seem very vocal today, i thought i knew where he was headed. Got two random gobbles each farther away. Last week he would gobble at anything could pretty much ping him anytime.

How close will you guys setup to the roost in the dark? Should I setup closer?

Ambush him dude .show him who the boss is. .he's a bird ..your a mammal ..and human...the ultimate predator..it works
