Just discovered this site in my search for some hunting areas. New guy here, figured I could share my experience.
A pair of buddies and I drove up to the Central Valley for the opener. My buddy did the dove opener there and suggested he was stepping on quails. Our experience was not the same haha.
We spent ~4-5 hours walking around, saw 10 birds, downed 5, came back with 3.... between 3 of us
I had some business in Visalia a week later and stopped back in on my way home for a solo effort.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Sunrise on a Tuesday....
Saw probably ~50 birds? They were definitely on edge, jumping way early. With no Dog, no partner, it was an exercise in bird watching. Nearly shit myself when a covey left a bush in front of me, by the time I got around the bush to see them, all were 30+ yards out.
Walked around for an hour, got 2 by myself. Nearly stepped on em, and gave em 15 yards and dropped em.
Shared a good meal out of the 5, but looking to go out again next weekend.
