Got into southern Alberta last Friday afternoon....Last year, there was virtually no sloughs or water....So we didn't there at all....This year there is more water and we saw more geese....Opening day was Saturday (Sept. 8th)....Decided to use a box blind (layouts were up north) and like what we expected, we only had 2 small family groups come in....We got 6.
Sunday, we were a little more serious, found a better hide with pea straw on the haybale blinds and managed 10....All honkers....We then packed and headed more.
Scouted some Sunday afternoon and one of our farmer friends sent us a text saying for a 30 pack of Bud light ($51.00 Canadian...ouch), he had a shoot for us....Checked out the spot, but it was mostly ducks....We did find another spot nearby that's his land too....So we decided to hunt that....12 honkers, 3 specks (thought we had a limit of 16).
Yesterday, hunted with some new friends from last year on a slough they said was a day time roost....Total bust with the exception on cousin Ron's one Hail Mary speck....In the afternoon, we hunted a pea field with bales....Was pretty good till the lightning and rain showed up....I had a limit and Ronnie had 4 specks & a honker....Left decoys in the field....Lightning is scary stuff.
No hunt this morning....Scouting and maybe hunt this afternoon where decoys are, if the weather breaks.....Snow starting tonight.
