Great time in Eastern Oregon! 2 birds in 2 days.
Day one, Bird one, I was set up near a creek about 700 yards from a roost tree, one hen decoy out, one they descended for the morning we begun to call, Large open field between the creek and tree except for a huge pile of hay that was about 6' tall and 80'-100' around. Watched 3 toms and 2 hens disappear around the hay and didn't want to loose them to a field i didn't have access to. after a 50ish yard belly crawl I peaked around the hay and they were about 40 yards out. I slowly got up on one knee eyed my tom and let her rip! One down! That sucker weighed in at 25lbs.
Day 2, Bird 2
Set up a blind just outside of one of the property owners where they are known to pass by. At first light a lone hen came through followed by a tom that stayed about 60yards out, to far for me... Pretty slow after that until a group of white tail came through at about 6' from the blind and slowly ate their way across the field, was a great way to pass the time in the blind. once the deer where about 200 yards off in the distance that same lonely hen came back to the field and shortly after that the same tom came through but at about 40 yards this time, KA-POW good night nurse!!! Little smaller than the first at 20.5 lbs but I can't complain. I am beginning to really like this blind, i also allowed me to get my first black tail last fall.
All and all an overly fun and successful hunt! Those private land hunts do not disappoint, even though it was not guided having access to the properties i did was surely a determining factor in my success. Seems my crash course in turkey hunting from YouTube university paid off as well...
9" beards on both of them the bigger one had around 1" spurs on him. Maybe next year i can get one with a full tail fan!
