Took Otto out to Wister for what we thought was his last junior hunt...After talking to the warden, we found out that this was in fact, not his last (17 and under for waterfowl).........
We got the spot we wanted during the draw...So, we anticipated an early limit...Our main goal was of course getting the 3 sprig...Well, it didn't quite go as planned...At shoot time (6:08 am), we didn't have a single duck in the sky or even fly by...And, this was after a week of nobody hunting...Yikes!...........
At this, we decided he better shoot whatever came in...1st duck was soon thereafter...A green wing that came screaming past...Miracle shot going away...Still alive at probably 60+ yds, but Coley was on it and caught in the tules...Thank God for this dog..........
After that, we had a slow trickle of birds come back...Mostly pintail and all were very leery except for 2...1st other duck was a bull sprig, then a bull widgeon, then a bull gadwall, then a bull spoon, then another bull sprig...By now, it's after 11:00 am...Finally, right at 12:01 pm, I see a pair of pintail fall out of the clear blue sky and into the decoys...I yell, "Kill the bull"...I think Otto might have been half dozing, but collects himself and stones the bull...Great shot and high 5's were in order!...........
Later on, the Wister crew and Devon Vega put on a great dinner, raffle, and get together for all the kids...Long day, but well worth it...........
ps...I even got my 1st bass of the year from Lake Francis..............................
