San Diego turkey?

I have 3 shots guns hahaha just personally like a bow a lot more

Is it a good idea to hunt from a tree stand then with a bow since movement is my biggest enemy

Never heard of anyone shooting a turkey from a tree stand, but I guess you could do it.....I think I'd rather take a small pop-up blind.

ps.....I like my bow too.....But turkeys are tough enough as it is.....I don't need it to be any harder.....lol

I talk to Deer Hunters and there has been occasion where a turkeys walked right under their stands. no big deal. but tougher to set up. personnel preference I guess.. Blinds to me are to restrictive in the shooting lanes. but they are good in hiding the movement..

I got one guy saying the turkeys know what they are and you saying use them hahaha
I mean I need one of them to hide movement

Good Morning everyone, just a question, when does the general turkey season open up in San Diego county?

Blinds do restrict your shooting lanes....No doubt about it....Hence, decoys or decoy in that shooting lane.....10 yds out.....The gobblers concentration is on the decoy.....Same reason I always use decoys with kids.

I'm getting confused now haha
You said not a great idea to use a blind cause you can't really call/decoy then cause of other hunters.
But that's what it looks like you were doing? Is that private or just a good place you found that you knew no one would be around

There are tons of different scenarios.....Those pictures are from a youth hunt in Santa Ysabel Preserve.....No other hunters around.....We used natural veg above the decoys.....It would be perfect for a bow.....Again, using a blind is just one tool of many that are used in different situations.....Most bow hunters I know use decoys & pop-ups (public or private).....And I don't recall ever saying you can't call from a pop-up or blind.....Lee said, don't use a gobble call. Which is sound advice on public land.

Another angle from the blind. Looking down on the decoys from 20 yds and in the shade.

Bottom line I gotta get out there and set up, and see what the situation calls for and then set up appropriately

Hi Drake,

Pretty easy finding places to hunt turkeys in SD Co.....Anywhere there's public land in east county can and will have turkeys.....Most popular areas are around Lake Sutherland, Lake Henshaw, Eagle Peak, and Boulder Creek Rds.

Invest in OnXMaps and get a paper CNF map.....Lots of private in amongst the public.....So, fine tuning is really important.

There's also the NWTF Spring Turkey Tune-Up (3rd Saturday in Feb). At the event, they raffle off hunts on the City of San Diego property that surrounds Lake Sutherland.....It's a great time and you can ask CNF personnel where they've seen birds.....7 gobblers were taken off the property last year.

ps.....NWTF San Diego chapter has meetings every 4th Tuesday of each month at Filippi's Pizzeria in Poway.....Starts at 6:30 pm.....You can learn a lot at these meetings.

this is a really lame conversation as people want everything for free. you gotta get out and scout to learn.

Free handouts are a guided hunt. I'm asking for a general starting ground to scout

General area would be Cleveland national forest. Get onx maps and start scouting if you are unwilling to do that you will not get a bird.
