My Message to management
From the people I talked to.

They complain there is no food for ducks at sj. So birds don't stay and move on. That the ponds have been completely wiped of vegetation.

Complaining of poor management.

Honestly there are plenty of things I see that would improve SJ.

#1 I'd like to see whoever is managing SJ to put some waders on. And traverse every blind like a hunter. I stepped into D1 and fell flat on my face and got soaked, because the entry was a drop off like a big hole. The paths to blinds need big improvements. I'm 60 years old I'm not as agile and this to me is one of the biggest problems with refuges. I say gravel the entries to every blind so people can make it to the blind. In ankle deep entry. Not up to my neck. Worst problem ever.

#2 plant some trees in and around walker. And any flat field with no blind. Plant stuff ducks like. Millet will grow just about anywhere. But if seed was put along edges of water filled ponds or blinds it would improve duck habitat and hunting. SJ could be bad ass if managed properly. But as is. No bird wants to stay just because it has water. They need food and proper habitat. To hold birds.
Just because you grade ponds and put water in them, that's not enough!!!
Sucks year after year spending tons of money for licenses for conservation, but nothings being done to actually improve the duck hunting experience.

When I was there I heard staff talking about I don't want to hear a bunch of complaining. We'll do a better job. I didn't even hear staff talking about rule and regs.as I was in line for sweatline and everything said in the morning should of been on loud speaker. Things like this are worthy of complaints. So I never heard what staff said.

My 2 cent rant.

Where da duck?
Saw 2 birds and the whole time.
Never fired a shot. The refuge had no birds.
Blind was full of trash and empties everywhere. Sad. I cleaned up the mess as there was nothing to do. Seems this is the scenerio Everytime I hunt sj anymore. First time back in 3 years and it's the same ol' bs. Nothing changes. Very sadIMG_20261024_134859315.jpg

You are not wrong but a couple of thoughts: 1. They have at least 3 cleanup and blind days at SJ every summer. Ive never seen more than 12 people at one. Steve works his butt off helping, often with money out of his own pocket. 2. There is not a ton of flooded acreage at SJ. Ducks are not going to stay long regardless. The minute they get up, they go to Lake Perris or when Mystic is full there. Also, November is and generaly has always been brutal there. 3. The staff has always been helpful to me whether it was Tom or Carlos or whoever. They have all asked me what they can do and even given me their cell numbers. You just have to talk with them.

So SJ will never be Wister or one of the northern refuges but it is great to have what we have. Thanks for picking up the trash and getting out. If I get into D1 this year, I'll bring a shovel and see what I can do. If not, I'll bring it up to the them and also work on it next summer.

Wish you the best luck this fall and hope we get a good push of birds and you do well!
