Not for the tag (easy to draw) but for the people, we are about to take off on a pretty cool hunt. Some neighborhood kids that I grew up with 30 years ago, who now live in Ohio, are meeting up with my dad and I to hunt 3rd season deer in CO. My Dad hasn't hunted with them in 20+ years when they were young teens. No tag for me but the brothers and my dad have tags so I get to play guide. Stay tuned for updates and pictures. We leave Thursday and it looks like snow is falling.

Last year was a good one!

Post em when you bag em.

Night before season we saw a 28” nice but a little crabby. 12-16” of snow on the ground.

Opening AM Saturday we passed a couple small bucks. Got the truck stuck. After several hours of digging we got it free. Upon doing that we heard of a local that killed a cow elk pretty far back so we decided to help. He needed it too. That evening we turned up a couple nice bulls but that was it.

Stay tuned for today. Im on a mountain with one of my Ohio buddies.

Well with a little karma on our side we hit it Sunday am. The wind has also been unpleasant so we stuck to some pockets that were more protected. Not an hour into the hunt we hit a small pocket and find a solid buck. My dad starts ripping the rifle off his back as fast as he can. The buck takes off and it’s not looking good. Sure enough the buck turns back for a second look and it fatal mistake. 308 barked and the buck went down where he stood. Buck down!!!

Well. After several days of really tough hunting dealing with snow and wind it comes down to the last day of the hunt. That morning comes and goes without luck. After lunch we decide to hit it again. I camp out on a small buck and my buddies start coming my way to kill him.

Not 1 min from getting to me they see a big boy. It was borderline a miracle seeing him as he was not moving and in the thickest stuff you could imagine. Despite only being 80 yards away my friend is having a terrible time picking him up and positioning for a shot. My heart is beating out of my chest and I realize my friend is looking 20* off. I help correct him. The buck is watching us the whole time, not moving an inch. I stay back and watch the whole thing unfold as my buddy has to expose himself stepping out from behind a bush.

As soon as he does that the buck jumps up and begins to leave. I had featured him that the Hammer bullets penetrate deep and just send it if the shot angle is steep. Sure enough, he does. The buck takes off. Boom. He sends another. I can’t tell what went down as the buck is running a little funny but the snow is deep and he is going full speed.

We give it a little time then I begin to track, no blood. This isn’t good. However I look up and there is the buck down. 200 yards from the shots.
