Congrats! Good thing you got him before the coyotes. Looks like one of the planted variety. He wouldn't have lasted much longer.
I'm hoping to find a few next week as well.

What size shot did you have? I shot at a couple with size 6 with my 20ga and the damn thing kept flying..
 
I was using Kent upland fasteel #6-1oz.-1450fps. Good stuff. Haven’t had anything get away yet. @just_ducky_1 not sure where the tail went.

Pen raised roosters historically have short or no tails, because they're raised in cages.

Got these 2 from a Heritage field Friday...Short tail and no tail...One of them was with a rooster that had a tail that any Montana rooster would've of been proud of....lol
