Thoughts?

The thing with hunting animals in their den is something I'd hope is only permitted to residents that reside in areas where they are substance hunting. Otherwise that seems stupid, dangerous, and cowardly all at once.

A long the same lines as shooting ( not hunting ) upland birds at the guzzler.

Slippery slope , you notice they slide in tracking hounds right with den hunting , not the some in my humble opinion but there it is.
 
I’ve been a hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman my entire life, I say that so you know where I’m coming from. But killing animals in their den, killing their cubs and the young is not hunting. It is simply killing, it is slaughter. I sincerely doubt it is a necessary or effective management tool. I doubt too it is a necessary practice for subsistence hunters. It is a slippery slope. If you go there then maybe open up a season on duck chicks, we could blast them right in the nest. Or a step further why not allow preserves to have puppy hunts. You could blast a bunch of little lab puppies.
I have a personal hunting philosophy which at its core involves ethnics and morals. I just find den hunting and killing the young unethical and repulsive. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it is ethical or moral. I understand we all have our own set of ethics and morals. These are just my individual personal views. I am not trying to argue or tell any of you I am right and you are wrong. I just throw this out there for your perusal. Food for thought.

I think we cast our modern day hearts onto hunting. 200 years ago you wouldn't care about the size of the rack you were just putting meat on the table for your family. There is a big difference between what one might think of as sporting vs what is practical. Imagine living in a time where killing something was the difference between eating and not eating.
Who are we to cast our opinions on a way of life and hunting that has been around 1,000's of years. The same people that don't want bear hunting also want to ban seal and sea lion hunting for indigenous people because they deem those animals as cute.

Give antis an inch they will take you a mile!

Bs article, the main thing is the state getting management control back from federal government. If they fit den hunting into their management plan, I’m all for it.

You know... I would like to hear what someone that has truly read the regulations and everything involved with them has to say about this topic. I am not that guy.
The thing is that too many times things (or news) are taken out of context just to create a point of view from people that will benefit the particular goal of the person or organization spreading those news.
I don't believe that an ethical hunter will do something that is not right. Even if the rules and regulations allow it.
Ethics: Do the right thing even if nobody is watching...

Us hunters are unpopular with a large number of people and actually hated by some. Here in California the number of licensed hunters is half of what it was 40 years ago even though the population has about doubled. Our numbers are dwindling. Laws like den hunting and killing cubs will do nothing to help hunters . Regulations like this reinforces the negative blood thirsty image many people view hunters. In turn people will put pressure on politicians to pass laws that further restrict our hunting privileges. Right or wrong I see no good that will come to hunters from this law Or regulation. I’ve already heard from one of my on the fence anti hunting/pro hunting friends and she is quite unhappy. Most hunting things I can explain to her and she understands and is ok with. This is one thing I couldn’t explain or justify to her other than talk about a state’s rights thing. She now leans a little over on the anti side of the fence.

I'm sure nature kills more Cubs than humans ever could......and since when do we know more than the bio's in the field dealing with it every day?

Great you got a doe tag......just remember to shoot grandma.....what?......otherwise you'll have to make a choice whether to shoot momma or her fawn. If you shoot momma her fawn most likely will not make it, so shoot the fawn and momma lives to breed again.

Life's a bitch so eat it up while you can.

We target Granny during our either sex season...sure wish i had more guys draw that granny tag..definitely have a surplus of the old bats on the 2 acres that need to go!

Many legit replies here. For me, it’s a states rights issue and management issue. If there are too many bears and people need the meat, nothing wrong with den killing although I wouldn’t label it as hunting. All things are relative. Some people say keeping a 5 lb yellowtail is baby killing. For others it’s ten pounds. Who gets to set the bar? One mans “baby” is another’s legit dinner.

Or what if they have an overpopulation issue or where they want to remove a group of bears or wolves from a certain area, and the quickest way includes eliminating a sow with cubs?

Even though I would never hunt that way, I would support others that do, if it means allowing the state to enforce its own game laws. Making something legal doesn't mean everyone will do it. Just means allowing more freedom.
