Well, I'm normally the one doing the inviting when it comes to turkey hunting.....Today I was the invited.....Friend Lee has had a property that he said help a couple of "Longs" throughout the season, but no one has had a shot at them.....This morning would be different.....Lee has hunted this property at least 3 times this season & bagged a jake a couple of weeks ago. So, he knew where the birds generally roosted.....The 1st gobble we heard was not on the property (not a good sign).....After about another 30 minutes, we got our 1st gobble closer in.....A single gobble.....Then we hear a pair, then 3.....2 strong and 1 weak.....Lee says, "I think the longs are in the roost trees today".....It wasn't long and we heard the 1st hen right before flydown.....We;re in a great blind (cut wood). So, I decide to call to get them....Soft & easy yelps, when Lee says don't move......A single hen had flown down where we couldn't see her and she was walking right towards us.....When she gets within 35 yds of us, she stops and here come 2 more hens, 1 jake, and the 2 toms to join her.....The big boys start strutting and I can see the full fans (it's still kind of dark).....As they move forward, I ask Lee if he has a shot.....He says no.....Then the hen starts moving away and I ask again.....He says yes.....Well then, on 3.....Boom!.....Mine falls, Lee runs off.....Crap!.....Apparently, there was a limb somewhat in has way and he probably shot high.....He was also shooting HeviMetal turkey loads as well.....Not only did they pattern terribly when I shoot them, but I know of at least 3 birds that were either lost or flew a longs ways before dying.....No Bueno.
Well, despite the miss it was a great morning.....And hopefully, Lee will get a couple more cracks at the lucky bastard......lol
ps......Stopped at Lake Henshaw......Heard the bassin' was starting to turn-on. So, I had to see for myself.....
