Hey, just looking for some direction. I tried hunting for turkey a few times near San Diego a few years back and got nothing. Can someone please let me know where to go for this season? Thank you.

I would recommend picking up a Cleveland Natl. Forest map. The spots are there, just need to work to find them. It's tough on public land here. My brothers and I have been scouting for 2 years, and we almost got one so far this yr.

Newt,

Welcome to SCH.....Like what was mentioned by Max, get yourself a CNF map.....Also invest in Onx Maps to fine tune, when you're out scouting.....Just driving the back country of SD will give you a feel for the country.....Pretty much the same I do when going to a new state to hunt turkeys.....No substitute for time spent scouting.....Good luck

Thanks. Is there anywhere else in So Cal that's a good place to try?

Might be a little late to spend a lot of time scouting but get to an area early and listen. at this point in the season, you'll want some good boots and a tank full of gas. Use a run and gun method to try and locate a willing gobbler. With hens sitting on nests, gobblers are ranging pretty far for a reseptive hen. Pick out your top three spots on a CNF map and choose a early AM spot, mid day spot, and a afternoon spot.

Look for areas with water and open fields where hens like to be out feeding. Toms and jakes will look for these areas to find hens. Most parks and large tracts of land in SD has prime turkey habitat. Find CNF property bordering these areas.
